Relearing Tire Postions

what is the purose of useing this ?

Rotate your tires, let one of them get a leak, and then see which one the computer "tells" you is the low one.... The actually low tire probably won't be where the computer "thinks" it is, after the rotation.

Haven't tried it on my truck yet, but never could get it to work on her Impala. :D

She got new tires this summer and the tire dealer was able to make 'em right.

I had my tires rotated last month and I never bothered re-learning them. If one of them falls below spec, I can figure it out. Besides, I know they put the fronts on the rear and did not criss-cross them, so it's pretty easy to figure out. :D

I've always heard it's not good to reverse the direction of rotation on radial tires,is that really true?

Hey, now... Just because your Devil's Spawn isn't around to correct you doesn't mean you can act like you know what you're talkin' about!

It actually once was true. Early radial tires were not capable of running in an opposite direction after being used. I'm told by our suppliers now that they actually recommend that you switch sides when moving from front to back. A lot of the construction and materials used in tires has changed over the years.

I remember as a kid, my Dad being happy if he got 20,000 miles out of a tire. Now 60,000 miles is not uncommon.

I thought that was only on bias tires...

If he put the right rear on the right front an left rear on left front he is not reversing the rotation.

Correct, that is what he did. I have heard both in regard to whether or not it's ok to reverse direction. My tire guys told me it's probably ok, but there is no need to anyway, so why chance it.

The rear tires should come straight forward, and the fronts cross to the back!! If you leave say the LF at that position for 10,000 miles, look at it ,it will be chopped up, most likely on the inner edges, you would want that tire going in an opposite direction, so that if it is chopped up, after so many miles on the rear it will smooth it back out! Look at the owners manual, thats what it shows.

That's how I've always done it. And I'm about a thousand miles overdue for a rotation. Oops!
