Pennzoil Vs. Mobil1 Synthetic 5w30

What is a better oil ? Pennzoil or Mobil1 >both synthetic.

I have a 09 gmc with 5.3 and am fixing to change my oil for the first time.

I was thinking about going with synthetic.

I noticed walmart has the 5qt jugs of Mobil for about $26+ and Pennzoil is $22.

Any comments/input on changing oil for the first time on a new truck.

I have 1500 miles now.

I talked to one mechanic an he said I could run synthetic to 9-10 thousand miles, just to change the filter at about 5k.

I'm not totally sure if I want to go with synthetic?

I have no problem changing regular oil @ 3-4k intervals.

LOTS of posts on this subject. Might wanna do a search as well.

I run Mobil1 in mine. I don't know anything about the Pennzoil Synthetics but I can't stand Pennzoil Dino. I run 5K oil and filter changes. No sense in risking possible long term damage by running further. Even with synthetics, it's cheap insurance.

Oh no.........Not another oil thread

But since you ask......

I do run Mobil 1 in my truck (Although I'm seriously considering switching to conventional Pennzoil)

However....My old Corsica had over 244,000 miles on the original engine and we ran nothing but Pennzoil 5W30 "Dino" oil in it its whole life from new, changed every 3k.

Only reason I had to junk it was because of the rust from the fine Pa. winters we get here!!!

I buy the Wally World Mobil-1 in the 5-quart jugs for my Corvettes. The LT1 and LS1 motors in the Corvette specifiy Mobil-1 in 5W-30 or at leat a full synthetic meeting the GM 4718M spec.

I have also used dino Pennzoil for years and never had a problem in any motor I had evenr owned be it Chevy, Pontiac, Ford or Chrysler. You might want to check the Pennzoil synthetic label to see if there is a statement about it meeting the GM spec. I recall seeing Quaker State full synthetic having that statement. QS is also a good oil.

As far as oil change intervals, with a full synthetic, I would go with 5000 intervals and use a good quality filter at each change. 10K is too long and I see no good reason to not change a filter at each oil change.

With my new 08, the sevice dept said that the first oil change should come at 5000 miles. I changed it at 1300 miles but jsut used our shops Chevron oil. I will switch to a full synthetic at 5000 miles and then do changes at every 5000 miles.

$26 for Mobil 1  . I am paying about $40 for the same oil. What the f&*k. Kills me the price difference. Anyway, I noticed that there was a $15.00 difference between the Pennzoil and Mobil 1 syn oil, and asked the same question. Is there a noticeable difference? I doubt it. In the end I went with Mobil 1 and a Wix filter.

Previous owner of my truck only ran conventional Pennzoil, and when I bought the truck, I started using Pennzoil Platinum synthetic. Great stuff.

First, you're gonna need another quart...the engine takes 6 quarts, so add another 4-5 bucks for the cost. With that said, the Pennzoil Platnum is GM spec'd and has had better UOA's than the Mobil 1. You can go over to Bobstheoilguy and read all day long.

I use the PP 10w-30, with either a GM or WIX filter, and change oil every 5k miles. It's too hot down here in TX to run the 5w-30. Been receiving monthly reports from ONSTAR stating to go to 10k between oil changes, but can't bring myself to do it yet. Have never had the OLM come on either.

And, just like c4cruiser stated, go ahead and dump the oil and filter now, use a good qualtiy DINO oil and filter, and then change over to synthetic at 5k miles.

I run Mobil synthetic in my 2 '08's and regular Mobil in the other 2, and Rotella in my SS. Before I started running synthetics, I used Penzoil dino with no problems. I mainly switched because GM uses Mobil from the factory on some of there vehicles and I also heard stories about Penzoil.

As far as when to switch over to synthetic, I changed my oil at 500 miles, refilled with dino. Changed again at 1,500 miles, refilled with dino. Changed again at 3,000 miles, refilled with synthetic. I'll probably go 4 months/4,000 miles between changes.

I run Mobil 1, change the oil and filter every 5K. As for the price I buy a case (6 qts) at local autoparts store for about $45-50, and I use the Mobil 1 filter, I think its &12.

I would rather pay the extra $$$$ and not give my money to walmart!

So, Rich, are you telling us that the oil that good ole' Wally stores are selling come from China to. Oil is the only thing, oooppss, I left one out, I get my Vicodin from the pharmacy, that I buy from there. I agree with you on the mom & pops stores, and look at how many small hardware and lumber companies that have gone under thanks to Lowes and Home Depot. We can go on and on about this, but I'd rather not. I do buy my air, oil and fuel filters from an auto parts store.

it doesnt matter where the oil came from the profits made from that oil will not do any good for the local community or the country, Walmart is interested in china. They tell companies that want to have products sold at a walmart, what price walmart is going to pay for them, and if the company cant sell it to walmart for that price walmart wants them to, then they are told by walmart to move there operations to china so they can sell it for less, or walmart will find someone else who will make it in china! They might hire lots of people but they pay them next to nothing and keep them all on the max hours you can work and still be part time so they dont have to offer health care, walmart does not play fair and because of that I will not give them a ephing penny! I am not alone either!

Anyone ever buy Salmon from sam club? it says in big words " wild alaska salmon" then in small words it says " caught wild in alaska, packaged in china" WTF!!!!!!!

Last time I looked I dont work in China, so why should I send my money there?
