This forum would be a great place to have a jack pot. There are plenty of members, and the more who enter, the higher the pot. It would be like a $1.00 entry fee, and all who enter who be ramdonly selected by a computer, or another honest method. The set rules would be you can only enter a drawing if you donate a dollar to the pot, using pay pal or something. We would need to have the pot holder to be a trusted individual, say like one of the site administrators. Would even be better if we could have a live drawing at a set date and time to see the winner, in this case each donator would be issued a special number. Say if there are 300 entries into the pot, then the numbers 1-300 would be issued. To make it fare and not turn it into an unfar advantage, you can only enter once, and have to have a certain number of posts at this forum so that nobody can make up an additional name and cheat. The software would have to also be able to log ip addresses for added security. And for you people who know how to spoof your ip address it wouldn't work, because you would have to verify your state and an administrator can verufy this.

 

The sweepstakes will be held at administrators descretion and either by number of entrants, or time date. Only one entry per member.

I don't know, seems like a cool idea, win extra cash for the holiday's. Anyone up for it?

Taxes and state laws would make it just about impossible.

 

That's what I thought too. Churches are Non-Profit, so they can get away with it.

Also when you play scratch offs and anything you win under $500 is not taxable by the Government. Anything over is. So in this case the jackpot can be limited at $499.

Federal doesn't really matter. It may not be taxed or regulated in YOUR state. But some states don't allow bingo, raffles, etc., and if they do, some states WILL tax the bejiggers out of it. And since we've got members from all over the world and all 50 states, I just don't think it's a good idea.

 

I've seen some sites do this sort of thing for goods/services, but that's usually the supporting vendors running that sort of deal, and I've never seen it require any sort of monetary investment from users...Just like adding their graphic to your sig and leaving it there for a month or something.

 

 

This is all (of course) my opinion. I'm not a lawyer or tax attorney, just a guy that overthinks some stuff.

My Mom is on the local town library board. This was even 15years ago, but the library would sell raffle tickets for a quilt or something for a dollar. The State came in and said they had to have a license of some sort. :P So they sold bookmarks for a dollar and later, a random bookmark purchaser won the quilt.

 

So you may actually have to "sell" something. :D But I'm sure the gov't will stop if they find out. They hate competition. :rant:

It is a good idea, though would be really difficult to implement for the reasons mentioned above.

 

But how about this variant.

 

Entry is $1 and the what happens with the money is that the pool goes to purchase a credit with a supporting vendor. So who ever wins the draw would win the credit with one of the supporting vendors.
