Greetings to all: Wow, first let me say this site seems great and Im already learning a lot of info!! Now..on to the issues :thumbs:... I love my gas guzzlers and each has a problem of its very own, please help if you can: My 1998 GMC suburban 1500 4x4 has a problem with not cranking occasionally. It will drive perfectly fine for days and then one day after it has been driven and maybe parked to go inside somewhere on errand..it will not crank. I usually end up having to wait hours before it finally cranks AND starts right up without hesitation. I have been told that the starter is good.. it may go weeks before it does it again!!

I have a 2001 Yukon XL 2500 w/8.1 and this truck just dies while driving! I mean you can be doin 75 along the interstate in traffic and the truck just cuts-off. I usally have to wrestle it to the side of the road and 99% of the time it starts right back up on first try. Its kinda dangerous though seeming their is no warning (engine light, etc)prior to it cutting off. I have read that it may be the Crank Position Sensor but when I checked my VIN# for the affected models, mine didnt match. But the symptoms sure do...

 

any help with both or one problem is much appreciated... thnaks and God Bless.

Hi there and welcome to GM Trucks! :lol:

 

Gotta just hate those intermittent problems. :thumbs:

 

For your Suburban I would suggest checking the wiring on the starter that it is securely a connected and not corroded. Next time it won't crank I would take a meter to the start to make sure that it is getting power or not. It may also be the ignition switch itself that is having a problem. Though I'm not sure on what the tests for that would be.

 

For the Yukon, I had a similar issue with my Tahoe. What it ended up being was the positive battery terminal. The terminal was cracked inside the battery and would occasionally loose connection causing the Tahoe to die all of a sudden, but then start right back up.

I just turned the 97 over as a trade on a new car for the wife yesterday. :thumbs: It looked just as good as the day I bought it in '96.

No crank, meaning it turns over but does not start? Then check your fuel pressure. If no crank as no turn over, then check all you electrical connections at the battery and starter. Carefull inspect your grounds.

Hey thanks for helping Draenor!! yeh, with the 98.. I mean as in No Crank=WONT TURN OVER.. it drives fine then i may go to the store come back out and then...Nothing..No clickin', nothing..just silence.. I will let it sit awhile and then it starts right up!! (thinkin could be faulty alarm (viper) brain gone bad maybe)

 

with the yukon 01' w/8.1.. it drives very well.. i mean you're going down freeway or street and then all of a sudden, it just shuts off... like someone turned the key to the off position while im drivin. God help you if you're on a one lane highway goin around a bend and it dies cuz you have to wrestle the wheel to get to the side of the road. Once it sits for about 15 minutes or less, it usually starts right back up without any further problems for about another week or longer... really frustrating cuz who has money to guess. the dealer has said..."cant duplicate problem" cuz of course it wont act up or show codes with them... thanks...im gonna try all of you guys suggestions asap cuz they make perfectly good sense.

The wifey is very happy with Otis (what she named her new Cobalt). :D
