2004-07 Vs. New Sierra 1500

I mentioned in another thread that I would like to get a larger truck to tow our 4000 lb. travel trailer. We have a Toyota Tacoma (V6) now but it doesn't have the guts for the hills we've traveled. It seems the Sierra 1500 with a 5.3 V8 is a good fit but I'm having a hard time deciding on whether to go new or used. I really like the classic style of the 2004-07 but with my desire for only a white exterior/extended cab the pickin's are slim around here. Besides, asking prices for the ones I'm able to find are not much less than new after factoring in factory incentives. For example, I looked at a 2005 Sierra 1500 that was in very good shape but they wanted almost $17k for it. Following are some of the details.

SLE, extended cab

5.3 V8

34,000 miles

The same truck new (2008) is currently priced at about $21k after factory incentives are applied. Does it make sense to even consider a used truck? Stock of new 2008s is now somewhat limited. So, would it be wise to wait until prices drop on the 2009s? A 6-speed transmission would be nice. Also, what about the quality of the classic vs. new?

With the current prices on NEW, I would just go new if you can do it comfortably...

I agree 100%

By the way Justin, your truck looks badass.

Plus any dealer would be happy to sell a truck, even happier to sell a leftover 08.

Since we have been chatting today, I will chime back in on this one. :smash:

I think between my dad and I, we have owned every GM truck body style since the early 80's and my 2007 tops them all (IMO). I love my 95, I still enjoy driving it. I loved my dads 03 and 05, but the ride, power, handling, and options on my 2007 are awesome.

I think 17000 for an 05 is too much right now with current 08 prices. If you drive a GMT900 truck you will be hooked. My wife didn't want me to get a truck because she is very sensitive to ride quality (she grew up driving BMW and Lexus), but she loves my truck and we take it more than any of our other vehicles.

Plus you get more power with better gas mileage in the GMT900 trucks vs the GMT800. I took my Crew Cab 6.0 to OK this weekend and averaged 21mpg on the way down and 19 on the way back (the mileage does drastically drop when you drive over 72mph). Hauling my Nova to KS a couple months ago I got 12.8mpg.

2008 vs 2009 that all depends on the deal you can work. I would love to have the 6 speed tranny, but from what I have read, its not worth the price difference. But if you could get a good deal, go for it.

Ok, I'm done

OK, I was just doing some internet shopping and found a few '08s that might fit the bill. Can I expect deeper cuts than the Red Tag price minus the factory rebate? I was looking at a couple that were about $30k MSRP knocked down to about $20k.

Yup, I agree. If you can get an 08, go for it, and don't stop dickering till you are at the price you want. It is amazing the price of a 08 truck right now. A guy from work was looking at a 08 2500 6.0 gas engine, and it was lower then the price of my 08 1500 that I bought 4 months ago. And this was the discounted price before haggling. I tow a 5000 pound trailer with my 1500 5.3L, and it is great. You will not regret leaving the Tacoma behind, and you get to hang out with us :smash: .

Cheers.

Are you saying that Red Tag + factory rebates are NOT the lowest the dealer will go? Sorry but I just don't have a feel for this market. The last time I bought a car/truck it was generally what you saw on the window sticker minus a few percentage points at best.

You have picked the ideal time to buy a new truck because you the buyer have the most leverage against the dealer. Dealers are willing to move product right now..take advantage of it....plus as the end of the year is on the horizon inventory must go! Used markets are flooded with quality used trucks from people who freaked at the price of gas, but most of those didnt need a truck to start with,I didnt buy a truck for gas mileage so for me I dont care. I wanted a truck to actually use it as such. If they wanted mileage why didnt they buy a (not so) smart car and not a truck duh! You can easily buy a new truck for not much more than a nice used but why chance used... So enjoy the new truck and post some pics when you get it... ya know your going to get it...lol

    • I like the idea.  I would pick diesel if I had a choice. I need pictures though.
    • I've installed cheap eBay new aftermarket digitizers before.  They work.  Did a bunch of Cadillac CUE (aka Cadillac's MyLink) for someone years ago.  They all worked fine after the repair.    That number 22740886, that is a component part # for GM.  You can use it to search, but its not something that's obtainable at the dealer level.     So pretty much any of these will work - 2015 Colorado Digitizer for sale | eBay

    • You can install tailpipes that direct the exhaust sideways vs the OEM one that goes straight back. There are several on the market, do you own research. HOWEVER, you need to make sure the Venturi vents are still intact, otherwise it will throw a engine code. There is a sensor somewhere that detects back pressure on the exhaust. And if it doesn't collect the correct metrics, it will throw the truck into limp mode.
    • "Teardown" is complete. Head surfaces are clean and ready, new intake is prepped and ready. Coolant drained and water pump is removed, radiator is removed, new hoses and pump are ready.   The replacement intake is also from a '95 (with I think 260k, the odometer said). Noticeably less pitting where it covers the rear coolant passages. I'm not sure if that's a tribute to more frequent use, more frequent coolant changes/upkeep, or if the intake was machined at some point. But it appears I found a good one.   My coolant hoses were original, and the lower hose still retained the factory spring inside. It's not really rusty, but it's got deposits all over it. Unsure if I should re-install it (will thoroughly clean it first). Someone said hose technology has gotten better since 1995 (has it?) and I don't need the spring. I think modern EPDM is what made those hoses last from 1995-2026, so it's a question of how much suction can the water pump really pull, and will it collapse the hose without a spring?   I'm stopped and waiting for parts, however.   When I first brought the truck home, the fan was intermittently hitting the radiator shroud. I could see someone had monkeyed with the shroud (put a bunch of cardboard as a spacer between the upper/lower shroud halves. Someone said the motor mounts have likely failed and the engine has sagged. I wasn't sure I believed that. The engine is really solid in its mounts: To remove the old intake I *just* nearly permanently welded to the heads with freshly cured RTV and gasket snot two weeks ago, I literally had to use the arms on my lift and a chain with a bolt attached to the intake to pull it loose. It almost picked the front of the truck off the ground before ....scuuuuuuuuuuup.... I could actually hear the gaskets tearing and it broke loose and the whole truck settled back down. Motor barely moved.   SO, those parts I'm waiting on... The lower radiator mounts/bushings had completely failed. The radiator needs to be insulated from the rad support, and the bushings help the rad stand at the correct height. The plastic "baffle" was also destroyed at some point. Someone had attached the shroud to it incorrectly, overlapping a joint that should have been underlapped, creating another suspect issue potentially causing things to hit the fan. Broken tabs, side is busted off, and it's perma-formed/bent where it was jimmied incorrectly.   The baffle? Unobtainum. Long since discontinued from GM, of course. Aftermarket/capa/chinese? Also unobtanium. In GM's infinite wisdom, it appears there are at least two different variations whether the Blazer is 2 or 4 door, and I can't yet tell if they shared the same part with the S-pickups. Plan B, if I can't find a viable used one, will be to create a bracket to re-assemble the critical joint I need to seal a gap with the shroud. But that will bug me, it won't be...perfect.   The water pump bolts appear to have been installed with...plumber's putty. I guess, sure, if it works...? I've found a few "backyard fixes" like that. Someone's been here before....   If I can't find someone to jam bamboo under my fingernails to fill my free time this week I think I'll install the driver's power window motor and replace the rear door speaker that's inop. I've got a genuine GM "9.5" ohm working replacement. Why GM used a non-standard resistance....nevermind. Of course they did, you can get more sound from a cheap factory amp that way.   And the saga goes on...
