Truck Loses Electrical Power For A Split Second?

This afternoon, when I was about to turn on my truck, as I went forward with the key, the truck appeared as if it was about to turn on, and right before ignition, it just went dead. I then turned the key once again and turned on as if nothing happened.

 

I noticed that my radio clock was reset as if it lost all power for that split second. This has actually happened 3x already and all three times it happend during different temps, while the truck was warm, cold, etc. There is no trend or anything.

 

Could this be simply a loose wire? could this be caused by the alarm maybe since it does have a remote start?

 

I know if I take it to the dealership they won't be able to recreate the issue...and like I mentioned, it's only happened 3x, but my fear is that it'll happen when I least expect it to and when I have no one around to assist.

 

Any ideas?

check all cable conections and grounds to the battery.

Basically all you can do is check the battery connections to be sure they are clean and tight. Then check the main electrical cables at the ends to be sure the connections are clean and tight. This would include the main ground wires and main ground wire to the engine.

 

Other than that, because this problem is intermittent, what I would do is use a "recording multimeter" set to record measurement of DC volts. Then monitor various points in the electrical system.

 

I would start at the battery. I would connect wires to the battery and run them into the cab and attach them to the multimeter. Then each time before I started the vehicle, I would turn on the multimeter and set it to record.

 

Then when the problem reoccurred, I could "play back" the reading and see if power was lost at the battery.

 

Then I would keep moving the test wires further and further down the line until I found the problem.

 

There would probably be a point where there was no problem, and a point after that where power was lost. Then the problem would be somewhere in-between.

 

(I would also remove the multimeter from the vehicle if it was hot outside as summer heat temperatures in a vehicle can damage a multimeter.)

 

Other than the above, might try taking it to a GM dealer and see if they can find the problem.
