383 Stroker

I'm thinking of putting a 383 into my 95. I was just wondering what it might take to do this. I'd like to keep the TBI or some kind of fuel injection set up if possible.

I've seen 383's for the 96 to 99. Can I get these to work in my 95? I know I need a vortec style intake manifold, but will my TBI and computer work?

I just don't know what 383 to get....

I had a 86 with a 383, 35" tires... no idea what the gears were, but it would light the rear right up.

Could I just buy a computer for a 96, a new intake mainfold, and stuff the newer 383 in?

Or would it be better to go with a 4bbl carb and skip the TBI?

Go carb

I'm running on a rebuilt 350 right now with about 60K on it. I just don't see this thing turning 35" tires without chugging. I know I can regear to 4:10 or 4:56. But that 383 I used to have was super sweet.

A 383 on 4:10's with a locker would be my ideal setup.

I just can't see rebuilding my 350 into a stroker. I have no garage to do this in..... I have to work in the driveway.

I am confident that I can drop in a long block myself.

I would either go with a carb or Edelbrock makes a nice upgraded fuel injections system for your truck. You would have to get a custom chip for your computer and get a bigger TBI to properly feed a healthy 383.

As for want 383 to go with, I can't answer that. There are too many choices to go with. But I agree the best way to go is to buy a crate motor. Most of the time it is cheaper than a rebuild and you have a warranty. I wouldn't consider putting a stock set of 350 heads on a 383 short block. You would be leaving a ton of power on the table.

You want a lot of torque for your application. That's what I would look for in the motors you look at. If you find someone building a 400ci+ engine for the price you are wanting to spend that would even be better. For me personally, if I was building/buying a new motor i wouldn't even think about less than 400ci.

I have ran every thing from 302, 327, 350, 383, 406/408, 422, 427 and 434ci SBC's and I love my big small blocks. My current motor is a 408 (400 bored 0.040) and it has huge heads on it and a pretty big cam (264 @ 0.050 and 0.692) for a street car and it still has a ton of torque.

But a 383 would still be fun.

I'm thinkin a long block is the way to go. I didn't think about the TBI upgrade.... makes sense. I use my truck to pull a 48 willy's around. The stroker would definatly make it less of a pain. Plus I've had one before and I kinda know what I'm getting into.

So, what do I do for a chip upgrade? Is that something I need custom done?

Yes you will need a custom chip. If you don't have a custom chip made you will not anywhere near the performance the motor is capable of if it even runs at all.

Check out some of these sites. They have some good info for you.
