Ok I've tried searching for this but I haven't gotten any answers. I have an 08 Silverado and I'm looking to put on different wheel. I was under the impression that I could only put 17's or larger. I just called the dealership and the service manager told me that I could put 16's on if I wanted. Is this true?

No, not true. You need 17's or larger. I believe 16's were acceptable on the GMT800 trucks but not the GMT900(that's the correct nomenclature, not NNBS) trucks.

When I went and ordered my new "winter" wheels and tires, the tire shop told me the smallest they can go is 17" because of the clearance for the calipers.

Thanks guys, that is what I thought. I even told the service guy that the reason I thought that was because the brakes. He told me that the work trucks come with 16's and that the brakes are the exact same. I will take the words of you guys over the service manager, which is kind of scary that the boss doesn't know his stuff. He was probably a salesman that could hang so they promoted him. Any ways thanks for reaffirming that for me.

The half ton W/Ts come with 17s just like the rest of the half tons. I believe the HDs can still fit 16s though, but I'm not 100% sure.

I'm pretty sure GM doesn't offer a 16 inch wheel on ANY new trucks anymore.

Unless they make a 17" version of the same wheel, Brian's truck has 16s...

Well, you are correct sir. GM literature does list 16 inch wheels as base for the 2500. I went and looked. 17s and larger only on the 1500s.

WTF?

Then maybe I look into that a little more perhaps. If he is willing to let me put a set on that might settle the issue. I will call and see if he is willing to. But then the next question is are they the same steel wheels that I have now?

If you have a half ton, you can't fit anything smaller than a 17 without grinding the calipers (Brian's truck is an HD, I guess they never went to a larger brake setup).
