Hello everyone, new to the Truck Forums. Just purchased a 08 GMC Sierra Crew Cab slt4 Duramax with all options available... I had previously owned my 03 gasser Silverado for 5 years and never had a complaint with it.

 

Finally I take the plunge for the Duramax, I decide to step up a notch in Creature Comforts and couldn't be more disapointed in the design of the windshield defroster..

 

Live in upstate NY with heavy snow and ice recently, and cant seem to get the entire windshield to defrost because the heat diffuser on the dash is directly in the center with no venting towards to the outside edges of the windshield. This allows the snow and ice to buildup and the wipers basically not to work because the snow and ice builds up on them... Has anyone else found this to be the case and if so, do you have you a fix for it or some way of improving this for better visibility out the windshield and less buildup on the wipers..

I can't say I have had DEFROST issues as you describe, but I will say this....

 

The stock wipers and the stalk design and resulting wiper design on this truck are NOT ideal. COmplaints of ice build up on the wipers is fairly frequent.

 

Many have gone with Trico Winter blades (your truly included), and it helps significantly. The 900 trucks don't have the traditional bayonett mount wipers, but rather a newer design (don't ask me why). Check carefully before buying replacement blade. I have found that many parts guides don't correctly list the replacement blades that we need, though they seem to be catching up little by little.

 

Do a search on wiper blades and you wil have plenty to read, and it has not been that long ago since those posts were floating near the top of the forum.

Keep in mine that Diesels dont like to heat up in the winter like a gasser does so the heat coming out of the vents will not be real warm to defrost the windshield, are you running your grill cover? When its real cold out it takes a long time to get heat in the cab if you dont have a grill cover.

if u have ice on build up on your wipers u probably have ice build up on your outside vents just below the windshield. make sure they are clear of snow and ice or it will not defrost properly

Sorry, couldn't figure how to post reply.

Plow snow here in NH and have a terrible time with the windshield. I have opened a claim with the District Supervisor for GM, and was advised to work with my local dealer, who has no idea what to do. The service manager suggested covering the center portion of the defroster outlet to force air to the outside of the windshield! I am considering using a supplemental heater fan on the dash, and hope that somehow, someone will be able to come up with a solution to what is currently a dangerous design.

      The oil filter has NOTHING To do with oil leak. GM sources parts from 1,000's of vendors and as with anything mass produced, flaws are unavoidable.    Putting a larger oil filter will do nothing but satisfy emotions. The OEM filter is designed for the engine and perfectly capable of handling the demands on the engine. Oversize oil filter could result in reduced flow and overall lower oil pressure.

      You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling.

      You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
