bug deflector?

Recommended Posts

Hi everone, Im looking for help finding information on bug deflectors.  I have the indigo blue Silverado so I am thinking of stainless steel has anyone had any problems with them and could you recomend a particular brand to go with?

Im also wondering about excessive wind noise after a deflector was put on.  A friend has a plastic one and it is mega noisy. Thanks for any advice.

I have the bugflectorII (wrap around on the side) and its the plastic one, it doesn't cause any additional noise for me.  Its basically 3M tape that holds it, with the option of screws.  I, myself only use the 3M tape.  I put this on AFTER the offroading trips and haven't been out since, but I'm sort of concerned it might be ripped off from branches.

Cost of mine was $60 CDN (got a discount from original $100).

Here are some pics:

I don't know anything about the stainless steel ones, but I've had two different kind of smoke colored bugshields.  The first was a AutoVentshade Bugflector II.  I liked it a lot, but it started cracking for ome reason at all the holes where it attaches to the hood.  It did cause the windshield trim to flap and makes some noise, but you can fix that easily.  Here's how: Bugshield and windshield trim noise fix  This should work with any bugshield too.

Since the Bugflector II cracked, I thought I'd try something different.  The one I currently have is a Lund Avenger.  It's a lower profile than a lot of the others.  I like it too, although it doesn't provide as much protection to the front of the hood.  I still have the Bugflector II and the receipt, so I may try to see if Advance Auto Parts (where I bought it) will let me exchange or return it.  The only thing is, I don't have the box and they may not take it back with out the box.  ???

so mountaineertom.....your bugflectorII actually caused noise at the windshield trim?  Was it excessive?  Or just barely noticeable?

I found that after installing mine I had no difference in noise level.

I also have the Bugflector II on a 1500HD and have not noticed any windshield molding noise.  This has been tested up to about 85 mph.  If you are paying $100 for a Bugflector II, you are paying too much!  I think I bought my HD and 'Burb's at Performance products for around $50 each.

I think he was saying $100 Canadian.  Don't know what that converts to in U.S. $'s though.  :)   Mine was $29.00 from Advance Auto Parts.

cdnav8r,

My Bugflector II did cause some noise at the molding at higher speeds.  Around 65-60 mph or higher.  With yours being on a Jimmy, it may cause the wind to flow differently so as not to cause any noise.  The molding may actually be different also, but I don't know for sure because I'm not too familiar with them.

The 3M tape I used completely fixed it for me, for about $5.00.  :D

oh, my $100 quote was the original price in CANADIAN dollars, but up here at Lordco, I was able to get it for $60 CANADIAN, so I think that still beats the $50 US  :) (I think $60 CDN is approx $37.50 US or something like that)

i have the bugflector II on my sonoma, and its very tough. ive had mine almost two years, with many, many offroad trips, numerous automatic car washes,  and tested to about 100mph, and it still looks like the day i bought it. no windnoise whatsoever, in fact, i feel it actually keeps wind away from the windows. but maybe its just me?

So did you only use the 3M tape?  Or did you also use the optional screws?

I'm just wondering since you said you took it offroading.  Right now mine is just 3M tape, but I'm worried about how it will hold up offroading.

I got the LUND Interceptor for my 2500 HD.  It's a whole lot taller than the Avenger, and very simple to install.  It only takes about 5 minutes.  It used 5 plastic thingies that go in the square holes already in your hood.  Then you put the bug def. on and use 5 screws that screw in the plastic things.  Nothing comes in contact with the paint on the top of the hood, just on the bottom.

It cost me $75.

i used the screws and tape, i dont trust that tape for the front of the truck, where it gets all the wind and rain. the tape is fine for the ventvisors on the door, but where it gets full abuse to the elements, you gotta have screws!

I am looking for a deflector also, for my '02 HD 2500.Is the Lund interceptor a stand away piece, meaning the bottom of it is open so that water, leaves etc.can not be caught by it?

I don't think the interceptor is a stand away one like you mentioned.  (The avenger isn't, that's what I have on my truck.)  It does sit away from the hood, so if leaves get in there, you could probably get them out easily.

Now, Lund does make one called the Trident Bug Shield.  It has vents under the front edge to "accelerate airflow over the windshield".  This may help with the leaf situation.  It mounts differently that the interceptor and avenger.  It has a rubber coated clamp kind of thing that mounts to the shield, and then you attach that clamp to the edge of the hood.  I had one on my 1/2 ton and it caused a lot of whistling noise, so I send it back.

I can't remember the link to Lund, but here's a pic of it at Cabela's (on a 1/2 ton though).  I think the Lund website has a pic of how that clamp works, if I could find it.  ???

By the way, welcome to the site.  Hope you enjoy it.  :)

Thanks for the welcome,MountaineerTom.

Checked that Cabelas' site.It sounds somewhat what I am looking for being no drill and open on the bottom. What you said about the whistle does tend to keep me looking.Saw one posted either here or another site(a child of the 60's keeps me from remembering too well). It was an open bottom and attached with press in plastic doohickeys.Couple of guys were happy with it.

Glad to be here on this site.New with computer stuff but been drag racing and playing with cars for 35 years.
