Bs Or Not .. Try Again

Well I got the truck in Dec. I picked it up at night and didn't get a chance to do a walkaround on it. Wife goes to dealer the following day to finish paperwork and does quick once around with dealer. We finally get a time to get the truck scheduled to go in to get the punch list fixed.

Ding in front bumper (crease)

Tailgate cap scratched/dented.

Front Driver door needs aligned/adjusted to close flush.

Dent in bed rail.

Pinstripe missing from front fender (driver side)

Overspray or some goo on almost all of the chrome emblems

Service Manager (SM) looked at bumper and agreed there isn't a way to pull the ding out. It is rather minor in the grand scheme of things, but it only took about 1 minute of it being in the garage before I found it. I made sure to have the wife mention it during her walkthrough. I mention to SM that I want to get the 6" chrome steps for the truck, so maybe we can get some deal there and just leave the bumper as it is. Anyway end up talking with General Manager (GM) at the dealer and his attitude was they over discounted the truck and gave me too much in trade. If I'm not satisfied with the deal and the truck as it is, he'll take it back and give me my trade back.

We did end up with a deal on the side steps after I pointed out a couple other items and discussed perceived value and the truck. (Like the dealer addon price of $995 for the $140 chrome grille) I am happy with the truck and the original deal, I only thought something should be compensated for some of the items discovered once the truck was in some light.

So was his offer to take the truck back BS and a game of chicken? Has anyone encountered this type of attitude before?

it sounds like the GM was being a dick, trying to lean on you so he didn't have to fix all the issues you've encountered. what kind of a deal did you get on the truck?

I haven't encountered that kind of BS from a dealer and definitely doesn't go along with GM strive for total customer satisfaction.

I've seen a varying degree of "cockiness" in Managers at dealerships and even told a few to get out of my face or suffer the consequences. Lots of them play games. Lots of them are complete assholios.

It takes some looking but there are also some REALLY good ones.

It sounds like your guy was willing to gamble that you would not take him up on the offer... and once you did not, he won. It's a game.

Out the door was $23 and change + trade

10k off gm sticker (35 and change)

no charge for dealer addon fluff they had priced out as

995 Paint protection

995 custom grille

395 pinstripe and tint

and some other stuff. Their fluff total was almost 2700.

gave me almost kbb trade (5k) for my old trucklet

(01 dakota quad 4x4 5.9 engine with fold-a-cover, air springs and some other fixins)

I would wonder about this one. The ding in the bumper, The door needing an adjustment, the over-spray on the emblems, pin striping missing. All this could point to prior damage???. I know its a new truck, but these things happen all the time.

sounds like you got a good deal, but that doesn't excuse the dents/scratches, etc. it's not like the dealer said upfront "we've heavily discounted this truck due to various dents and scratches". i'm sure they were advertising a new vehicle in new condition. make that douchebag GM fix that stuff for you.

btw you got a hell of a deal on your trade-in if they were close to kbb. i got raped on my trade-in. post some pics of your truck, lets see the sexiness

Holy shit $995 for a grille? That thing ought to be pure stainless steel or solid chrome. And what paint protection did you get for $1000? At that price you could have bought a lifetime supply of zaino.

Call his bluff and let him buy it back from you and get your old truck back. I think you got a great deal on the new truck but having to deal with those issues wouldn't be worth it to me.

I'll take photos of the truck tonight. Still haven't gotten around to taking any. If I hadn't put the brake controller and the wheel well liners in it (and bought the fold a cover, and other stuff) I probably would have called him on it.

"Overspray or some goo on almost all of the chrome emblems"

Mine had that too, in fact it's still there in a few places. It's the leftover adhesive they use to hold the plastic on to the chrome letters during transport. It comes off with a little goo gone or wd 40.

Some quick detailer and elbow grease worked on mine.

The "issues" you describe would almost lead me to ask myself: "Was this a demo that got into a little "bonding" with another vehicle or in-animate object?"

My experience indicates that there are GOOD REPUTABLE dealers, and the ones like what you describe, and little in between --- but that's just MY experience.

Anytime I go to a lot and see "fluff" stickers (like $700 pin-striping, $295 rubber floor mats, $1000 "paint protection" packages), I leave. These dealers are part of the "old school turn the customer into a pop-sickle" crowd.

My dealer had a "protection package" on my vehicle ($299) that included a 5 year warranty certificate for ANY paint/finish issues. It was the only "fluff" factor. Did he make money on it? Sure. Did I get something out of it? Yes, a warranty. Rip-off? Maybe. Called the protection company prior to my purchase, and, yes, indeed, my dealer was a registered "dealer" for their products. Further research indicated that this paint protection has a good to excellent reputation. SM told me that they had processed several warranty claims on paint blemishes without ever having a problem.

Bottom line....other than the fluff, LOOKS like you got a reasonable deal. BUT, if this is a new car, I would stand for NOTHING LESS than perfection to my liking upon taking delivery (with the slight comment that I tend to be reasonable and not overly "over-the-top" picky.

I would tell him to fix it or get my keys to my truck so i can get the hell out of here. If he thinks he gave you too good of a deal it should be in writing as is. I had a salesman try to hold on to my keys and not give them back once. Third time I told him to give my keys I grabed his hand and started squeezing his hand .He let go of them then. My wife will not go with me to the dealer no more lol.
