Correlation Issue

Hey everyone, how goes it? My buddy and I just replaced the intake gaskets on his 96 GMC 2500, 5.7L, AT, two wheel drive pickup. Everything went well, truck started up after reassembly, runs great! But get a code for crankshaft position sensor/camshaft position sensor correlation issue. We can reset the code but it will come back on within 1 minute. As I said the truck runs good, good idle, good power, and good acceleration.

Any suggestions?

Probably need to do a crankshaft relearn procedure on it.

I honestly don't know how far back. I know I did on my 01 when I replaced the engine. What you describe sounds like what it was doing.

I "think" the crank relearn was not possible untill 99-00. I "think" that I have to pull the distributor and retard it 1 tooth. Most older style HEI would run well advanced, but not very well retarted. Since this truck performes well, my only option would be to retard timing.

 

How much compensation can the computer provide on the ignition timing?? Correct me if I am wrong, please!

althoe the engines runnig fine when you pulled the distrubuter you didnt get it back in it's exect place . the computer is compncasting for it and it thouws that code .set top dead center than reset the dist.

Provided that it is connected properly and operating, a relearn just puts the two in sync so that the computer tells the ignition when to fire. Perhaps it isn't like a newer system but if it's creating the code, it would appear to be the same problem. Maybe my terminology is wrong... Was 96 still TBI?

The code he is getting implys that tit isnt getting the sam sinc signal from the cam and cranks sensors , mainly cause it's not firing at the same time the computer expects it to . this is caused by the distibuter being of by a tooth or two . i have personly ran into this exact thing working on a 1997 tahoe , had to replace an injector and removed the intake . thught i had it marked out right and it was of . truck ran great but had the same code . took me 2 hours to get it set right.i am a mechanic by trade and it took me that long .

I see. That actually makes pretty good sense. I didn't know how far back the relearn procedures were needed or used. Or when they were implemented.

Just an update, took distro out and reset. SES light is now staying off. It took two hours to get it right!
