Back From Vacation!

Well, I'm back from our vacation week. We rented a chalet at a ski resort for the week, I skied, and the wife and daughter lounged around and played in the snow. :( It was a good vacation, by the last day skiing my legs were pretty darn sore and tired though. Odd weather though with a temperature inversion going on. At sea level there was freezing fog and temperatures below 0 C, but up on the mountain it was +8C. Being so sunny and warm there were many people just in light jackets and t-shirts on the slopes. Right up until Saturday afternoon there was nothing but sunshine, then the cloud moved in and it started to snow.

Here are a few pictures.

Looks like you guys had a lot of fun...

Thanks. :M16: Yep, no broken bones or blown knees. :M16:

We went to a local resort, Mount Washington. It's only three hours from home and is a good mountain.

Yep, that is a DMax in the picture. I don't know who's though. It belongs to the people staying in the other side of the chalet. I never did see them. But then I didn't hang around out chalet much during the day. Too much skiing to get done and ski bunnies to watch. :(

Thanks. :M16: One of my goals was to come back in one piece.

:( Yeah, those are old skis. '90 model bought in '91. They're 190cm racing skis. But time for new skis now. It'll be weird skiing on the new shaped skis.

Happy to hear you had fun Darin. Those pics are awesome..suitable for wallpaper(uh,on a PC I mean). Now you gotta give the new 'Hoe a bath and make her all pretty again :(

Nice 2 questions

How does the hard case mount to your roof rack? Is it easy to access?

Second did you get the 3rd row seats in your tahoe?

Thanks Gary! The view from up there is really amazing when it's clear like that. The full size versions of the pictures would make a good wallpaper or background on a desktop. Oh the 'Hoe sorely needs a good bath right now. I'll take her through a car wash as we're expecting some snow tonight and tomorrow morning, and it's only 3C out right now. A little too cool for me to give her a good hand wash.

The hard case is pretty easy to install and remove from the roof rack, about 5 mins either way with just me. It mounts to the roof rack via brackets attached to the case. The brackets are tightened and lock from inside the case. The outside part of the brackets are notched on one side so it will swing away from bolt to make installation/removal easy.

I find it pretty easy to access. I just stand on the running board and I can reach the case easy enough to fill it up and take stuff out. The case could also be moved closer to the side rail to make access easier. The case closes with a sliding pin the length of the case and has a key lock. It worked really well for the trip and holds a surprising amount of stuff.

The case does have to be mounted on the passenger side though.

I did get the third row seats with the tahoe, but have them out at the moment.

Looks like a good time even tho I don't know how to ski or snowboard.

Well, someone needs to stay in the bar and keep the seats reserved when lunch comes and for apres ski. :(

Then also it's not too late to learn! I didn't learn to ski till I was 22.

I skied in high school on the ski team and had some 205cm Kastle's. I still have those skis but the bindings are shot. I gave up skiing a couple years after high school (1984 grad) and decided to try it out again a few years ago when my daughter asked me to chaperone a school ski trip. We rented and I thought I was going to need to re-learn how to ski, but it was "like riding a bike". I decided to buy some new skis and picked a pair of Head skis, Tyrolia Bindings, poles and boots online from a store out west at the end of a season. Got everything for about 1/2 price.

The new skis are so different, even the techniques are different for carving turns.

No more racing for me though.

I found that as well. I didn't ski from 02 to 08 and I wasn't as rusty as I thought I was going to be when I went back. The hardest thing I found was taking the tape off my knees afterward and all the hair that came with it. :(

I was talking with an instructor on a ride up the lift and he was saying that the new skis tend to ski themselves more than classic skis. The analogy that comes to mind is like manual versus power steering. I can see that putting me in several 'humourous' situations for the first while.

Next year I'll get my daughter in her first lessons. That ought to be interesting. :M16:
