I wasn't really close with Ryan because he was a year younger than me, but I knew him pretty well through his brother Dan, who is a senior in high school. This news article doesn't list many details, but last night Ryan's older brother Dan was high, and was playing around with his dad's service weapon. Ryan was asleep and I guess Dan planned to wake him up and scare him with the gun, but Ryan waking up scared Dan because he was so high, and the gun went off. From what I hear, the shot was in his stomach, and he died after arriving at the hospital. This has been weighing on my mind all day just knowing how easily life can be taken from us. It really struck me when I started thinking about how happy Ryan always was, and the things he'll never get to experience. He never had a girlfriend, he never drove a car, he'll never see his senior prom, he'll never graduate high school, and all the other things we teens get to experience. I just had to get this off my mind. Thanks guys.

Dan is on the left, and Ryan is on the right.

MAN, what a total waste.

Heaven help this poor kid (Dan) ... but man what a totally idiotic thing to do. Next thing you know, somebody will blame the gun.

RIP Ryan. You deserved better. :D

EDIT: My sympathy goes out to the family. I hope Dan thinks about this a long time... but I wish him well.

Wow, I am simply at a loss for words here.

This is absolutely horrific for everyone involved, especially Dan as he will have to live with this his entire life.

Prayers for everyone, especially Dan. He was likely a good kid who simply made a bad decision.

Very well put. And I agree.

Nobody has been able to talk to Dan as his phone is off, and his home phone is off as well. My buddy's mom was real good friends with his mom and she's having a bunch of people over to make food and things for her.

Jeff, I couldn't agree more. Dan was always in line. His father wouldn't let him be any other way. He never used drugs; maybe an occasional dip, but we all do. The past year he's started smoking weed, but nothing I was ever too worried about because he was still social and never let it come before friends. This was completely unexpected by anyone who knew him. I got wind of this from Facebook, and finally called my buddy to see what was up. I haven't stopped thinking about this. Puts a lot of things into perspective for me.

That totally sucks. Not just for the kid who lost his life but, for the entire family. If I read this right it was his brother who shot him, he is going to have to live with that his whole life.

It's a horrible situation all the way around. I cannot possibly conceive how the older brother feels. I feel deep constant pain and guilt for my mistake... and nobody got hurt in mine. :D

My thoughts are with the entire family. :D

Tragedies like this are exactly why people should stop pretending that getting high is ok. Only get high once a month...no worries, it's ok and if you get caught, you'll get slapped on the wrist, fined $30, and set free. Shit like this is a tragedy for everyone involved. The victim, the victim's family, the person that held the gun...everyone that ever knew any of these people are suffering right now and they all need our hopes and prayers. However,

when the **** will people realize that we need to stop letting drug users off the hook because it's ok, it ISN'T! Hell, most people don't realize/care that our tax dollars supply drug users with free, clean needles...no questions asked.

That sucks for everyone involved. Coping and picking up the pieces after a regular death due to age or medical reasons is hard enough, but to have to deal with someone that young being gone and having it happen that way is something I can't even fathom.
