Stock Or Aftermarket Intake System?

Recommended Posts

Well, now that I got my exhaust on and just about broke in, I'm gonna be either upgrading my air filter or going to a whole new intake system...I had a K&N 63 aircharger on my 2500hd and it had some nice grunt but I didn't like the open top design and the filter got clogged too easily...So I may just get an AEM dry-flow filter as the closed-box intakes are 400 bucks (at least the ones I would consider getting)...I plan on getting a scan-tune done soon so this will come first, then wait about 3-4k miles and then it's tune time.

Is there actually any benefit to getting a "cold air intake" (an oxymoron as the open filters pull in more hot air from the motor...) I do mostly on-road driving, only offroad occasionally now and I do drive through some nice dust storms from the forest roads at Ocala National Forest.

The stock airbox is a cold air intake.

No, you will not see any noticeable power/mileage gains with an aftermarket CAI. But they do look and sound cool. :D

I have the GMPP CAI with an AEM Dryflow cone filter and I like it.

Does AEM even have a stock replacement filter? I've searched some sites but most refer to it as a conical filter and I need a panel type...Otherwise I might have to find a cheap/used GMPP box?

I have the S&B Intake. (I painted it before I installed it along with the engine cover). I had one on my 2004 Dodge Ram cummins also. Great fit, finish, and quality.

Just buy a $90 Airaid MIT tube that goes from the MAF to the TB. The factory tube with the baffles and air silencers is the problem. That's where the restriction is, it's not in the filter. The stock airbox is a cold air design. The stock air filter flows plenty of CFM for these V8's @ WOT. AEM does make a flat dry panel filter. If you cross reference the dimensions to the drop in K@N, its just a tad smaller but should still fit.

+1... I have the gmpp CAI with the dry filter that came with the unit. Looks cool under the hood. Gave me MAYBE a little more performance, but it makes the thing sound like a NASCAR when it kicks down along with the FM muffler...

Yes, AEM does make a replacement panel filter. I have one in my truck along with the Airaid MIT.

+1... I just ordered an Airaid tube from summitracing.com. It's price went up a little and is now $115.95. With handling it was $128. Check it out...

+1 although I can't say I really noticed a difference. At least I won't have to buy paper filters though, and the engine compartment looks much less clutters with the Airaid MIT.

For the cost of that tube and add in a filter, I'd only be a few bucks shy of a AEM full system...Might as well, it's only 280 bucks.

I spent the extra $$ for the GMPP CAI for the appearance. No noticeable performance/mpg gains but I'm very happy with it.

I put an Injen on mine. Like it so far. Does not make a lot of noise as some do.

Also put on a friend 2007 Durmax.

I like a little bit of both

I, like many others, used the Airaid MIT tube with an Airaid replacement filter in conjunction with the stock air box. but then, opened up the front of the stock box toward the headlight like this.

free flow design and it roughly doubled the intake opening. and before anyone jumps on how this is now a "hot air intake" I've tested IAT's before and after in numerous driving situations both city and highway. this did not affect them at all, the opening is far enough in the corner of the engine bay that it doesn't soak in any under hood heat.
