The other day I went out to discover that one the tires on a tailer was flat, so I pulled it up to the shop and discovered that our 3/4 inch drive impact is wore out. Must not have the power it had when dad bought it 30 or so years ago. Also discovered the chinese made 3/4 inch strong arm wasn't built tough enough, as it is now bent.

 

 

Now I know there are a few of you here that either own or operate tractor-trailer units, so im gonna ask, what impact do you use? What brand do you reccomend and would you recommend a 3/4 drive, or a 1 inch? What particular model do you like?

I only have a 1/2 inch impact. It's an Ingersol Rand Titanium model. It's darn strong in 1/2 inch. I'd bet a 3/4 inch would rip just about anything in two! I think the 1/2 inch goes for around $240.00

Price, reliability and availability of parts, Ingersol Rand all the way. I don't waste my money on Chinese crap tools. Buy American if you can. Cheap tool = trip to doctors for stitches. BTW, if you don't do this often a good US made breaker bar is okay too. Torquing the Lugs is more important than you think.

Thanks for your input. I do have a couple year old high end Chicago Pneumatic 1/2 inch drive impact. It does come up a little short on these wheels however. Judging by how i bent the strongarm with a 3 foot snipe, the lugs are on a little tighter then the recommended 500 ft lbs of torque. Have asked around at a few tire shops, and they have all recommended 3/4 drive CP's.
