Need Some Help Picking Out Mufflers

Hi everyone,

I have a 98 Suburban K2500 with the 454, and I swapped out the stock muffler for a flowmaster 50 series dual in, dual out muffler.

Now, as awesome as it sounds, it drones far too much for any reasonable amount of highway driving. So my question for you is, what pair of mufflers should I get to quiet down the cabin sound without sacrificing too much of the performance/gas mileage improvement I got by changing away from a stock muffler setup?

Short Version: I need two mufflers, EDIT: 2.5 inch [whoops had 3 inch written] that are decently quiet, yet still perform decently, what should I get?

I had a '98 K2500 with the 7.4. I went with the Flowmaster 70 Big Block muffler, no drone.

Sounds great! I would do it again, on a big block.

I ran a Flow Pro on my 8.1, I preferred the FM 70.

alaskaLTZ, was it a suburban or otherwise enclosed truck, or was it a pickup?

It was a short box X-Cab with an enclosed fiberglass canopy, so if it had droned, I would have known it.

If I were you I would look into Corsa. They now sell the mufflers all by them selfs I belive they call them DB mufflers Drone buster. You can't go wrong with corsa.

Thinking into it more, I guess that it doesnt drone all too badly, but the issue is just alot of loud cabin noise. It gets a bit quieter between 55-65 miles per hour, but I like to speed more than that... >_> My issue becomes that at around 80 miles per hour the engine is revving at almost 3000 RPM so it gets decently loud, and that is what I was hoping to avoid. I assume that going to a true dual exhaust (two full mufflers, instead of one dual in dual out) will help with volume because there will be almost twice the volume of muffler on the truck. Am I incorrect in this assumption? Also, is it even possible for me to find a muffler like that without sacrificing a significant amount of performance?

I have the corsa db black series on my 2004 silverado with 5.3L. It really does not drone at all. Its loud when you want it to be loud but subtle when you just fart around.

Hope this will help out... Mine sounds somewhat different than the other guy on this forum but when driving sounds similar.

Reving, don't say no until you watch the other video also..

when driving its not as loud in the cabin because of the R&D (research and development) team at corsa. When you get on the gas, it can sound like a bolt of lightning though LOL.

GL!

Comments are very appreciated on here and youtube.

Well from what I'm hearing in the Corsa videos, they are waaay quieter than what I have on there now...

I have some videos to demonstrate the sound:

1.

-- From rear, immediately after installing muffler

2.

-- Decent demonstration of in cabin sound

3.

-- Sound outside, behind and driveby, WOT

I'm going to look into the corsa mufflers a bit more. Do any of you think that the fact that this is an 11 year old truck, combined with the higher engine displacement, that they would be much louder than jrmchevymam's setup? I honestly don't care how quiet the mufflers get as long as I get decent performance, as well as not being ludicriously expensive.

Sounds like what you want is a Magnaflow.

LOL mags are a little to quiet IMO.

Umm....there are different ones out there

I know a guy who has one of their race series on his 'Hoe and it's loud as hell.

True they have a race series just like the flowmasters have a race series. We are not talking about "Race" series mufflers for actiongrant as he does not want to go that route. All mags except the race series are quiet IMO.

I also have 70 Series Big Block Flowmaster. I love it! Mellow tone but has a good V8 rumble to it. NO RESONANCE AT ALL!

Those flows sound fine to my ears, don't sound loud enough to be obnoxious at all. The corsa's are a "TRUE" straight through design and do not have the baffles or so called (Stuffing) like the other so called straight designs.. For performance in theory you probably wont see a difference at all as it will be to little to see on a stock or close to stock engine. If you had a mild setup the corsa design would see better power gains + headers also..

The corsa's are not restrictive at all though and flow really good. Up to you if you want to take the plunge but your flows sound fine.
