Gmt900 - Changing Gearing For 35 Mud Tires

I know it's been discussed, but I'd like to hear from someone who has a GMT900, has a lift and has changed gears. NO, I'm NOT going to start a poll, I know you're all disappointed.

After taking my truck on a long trip this weekend I realized I need gears worse than I thought I did. I thought the tune would make up for it, but any little incline on a highway causes my truck to downshift right away, so it's constantly shifting on the highway which makes for a very uncomfortable ride. , 4th gear is only good downhill or on flat roads. My gas mileage has also gone in the crapper.

I think I've seen a few guys on here who can answer what I'm looking for.

I would like to know:

What gear ratio you went with.

Which brand you got.

Where you got it from.

How the different gears feel around town and on the highway.

How long/how much $ for the install.

Thanks

i dont understand this gear stuff.

Gear ratio: either 4.88 or 4.56. The 4.88s will help you with acceleration so the truck will feel stronger for around town driving and will only be about 150 RPM higher at 70mph on the highway... (i loved my 4.88s w/35s on my highway driven DD)

Gear Brand: Yukon or Precision

Where to buy: Randys Ring & Pinion (online)

$$$$ For install: call some local shops- varies A LOT.

I say go with a 4.88 from Yukon. I think I have read about you wanting/talking about bigger tires, so if you do go up to a 37 or so, the 4.88's will still be great for that tire. Stick with 35's, still not too bad. I hear good things about Ron's machine shop on Ebay. Seems to have some of the better prices. While you are in there, might as well swap out the g80 as its a ticking bomb. Detroit TT and some gears and your set. I hope to get all my gearing taken care of by summer. Rates around here have been about 500 for install of front/rear.

Thanks Justin, you and Matt are the only two I ever heard saying to go with the 4.88's. What exactly is the g80 (ticking bomb)?

Still red.

Your truck is looking really good these days

4.88s are pretty steep. Best way to figure a new ratio is to figure your OEM tire size and axle ratio, then figure a new equivalent for your new tire size. There are a bunch of calculators for this online. That'll give you a good start.
