Water Pump Replacement!

I will be putting a new water pump on my truck in the near future.

My only question is in my res tank the coolant looks kinda brown, and there are brown crustys in the tank. Should i have the system cleaned and flushed with my old water pump on, so that the crustys dont lessen the life of the new pump?

but honestly if the debris will not harm water pump bushings and seals i really dont care about the condition of the fluid. Im spending enough with the 200$ water pump!

How old is the coolant you have in there now? Better to have fresh coolant installed now if it's time. Are you changing any or all of your hoses at the same time? If so just flush it while you've got it opened up. You can remove the tank to clean it. Where are you buying a $200 water pump? You can get an AC Delco for much less than that.

i didnt plan on changing any hoses, but well see about that when i go to get them off.

i dont know the age of the coolant

could you kinda give me some steps to flushing it once its apart

and im pretty sure i priced the water pump off a GM pats direct site, im pretty sure it was like 203.00 discounted! but it was a delco pump.

and im pretty sure i priced the water pump off a GM pats direct site, im pretty sure it was like 203.00 discounted! but it was a delco pump.

I'd run some of that flush in a bottle stuff through it just prior to replacing the pump. When my Jeep pump started seeping, I did that and the inside of the block looked like new when I did the pump. It was as easy as draining the old coolant, replacing the pump and adding new coolant. It worked great for me and didn't cost much.

Check rockauto.com. See if the pump they show is the correct fit for you. I think you need the updated thermostat housing for the new pump. Still shows to be less than $200 though. If you don't know the age of the coolant, I'd go ahead and replace it. Good coolant allows all the different metals and gaskets in your engine to get along. You can flush clean water through the system with hoses in place. You'll need to pull the thermostat though so water will flow unobstructed. Or you can do as Zembonez suggests with the chemical flush. Follow the directions on the bottle. Check the condition and age of your hoses and belts. Also inspect your fan clutch to see if it's still good. If you suspect it's the original, again I'd replace it. They lose their effectiveness over time. A weak fan clutch will usually affect your AC performance before it will show up on temp. gauge

so zembones would i add that to my existing antifreeze and run it for awhile then drain and refill once the pump has been installed? also is that a brandname or just a generic term?

and ill check out rockauto.com and see what i can find out, also my fan clutch is pretty stiff and AC kicks ass.

Prestone makes a flush. Just follow the directions. Just do a final flush with clean water to remove all traces of flush and old coolant.

Many coolant brands make the stuff. Prestone is a good one.

thanks i really like it only paid 4800 for it with 130xxx but its got a couple kinks, but awesome truck for the money.

Yours is sweet too never cared for the NBS trucks until i saw one with nice wheels and a grill, the wheels just make the difference.

I'd stay with buying something from a known manufacturer with a warranty. Have you checked rockauto? For the same price looks like you can get the AC D for $86.75 shipped.

I tried rockauto but I couldnt find a 6.0L listed for a 2000 sierra 2500. I saw a 5.3 option im pretty sure its the same pump but im not sure. Did you find it using the 6.0L as the motor?

Drain the old coolant, refill with water and add a bottle of a good flush, Prestone, Zerex, Radiator Specialty etc. Drive it for at least 15 to 20 mins. Let it cool a little and drain it out. Refill with clean water and drive it again. The instructions will tell you to do this once. I like to repeat this at least 2 times to be sure all the flush is gone.

Now replace your pump and stat. Refill with a 50/50 mix of Dexcool and water. Some people suggest distilled water. There are some who do not agree with this.

I would stongly suggest you add a bottle of Kool It from Lubgaurd (part # 96001). This is a wonderful product that will eliminate all Chemical Electrolysis in your cooling system. We sell a good bit of it and have many stores who recommend it with every water pump or radiator replacement.

Be careful in your decision on a new pump. The AC Delco would be fine or a new pump from ASC or Airtex (same co.) ASC is an OE supplier and their pumps will look, fit and operate just as OE. Not all "new pumps" are created equal.
