Starting Problem 01 2500hd 6.0

Hi. When I try to start my 01 2500HD 6.0, it cranks and cranks but won't fire up. When I switch the ignition back off and then restart it, it starts right up and runs great. No bogging or anything. If I stop somewhere and then come back to the truck after a few minutes, it will start right up. Other times it does the same crank-forever, switch off, restart and then runs great. For a few days straight, it would just start right up first try. Engine always runs great after it starts. Any ideas? Thanks!

I would run through the tests in the fuel and emissions service manual for the fuel system. One of these tests is for a check valve which keeps the fuel from draining back into the fuel tank when the engine is shut off.

Then if the fuel system checks OK, check ignition, etc.

That makes sense. I'll check on that check valve. Thanks!

I would check the fuel pump. I had to replace mine last year and that was the exact symptom. $500 later all was good.

When you turn the key in the morning but don't start it, do you hear the fuel pump? My mechanic showed me that trick. When it wouldn't kick over, no sound. When it did I could hear the fuel pump charge the system before it cranked over.

hope this helps.

had this happen to my 2001 2500HD a couple years ago. No codes will come up b/c its not a hard fault, u said u can turn keey off and back on again and it will start then, same with mine, change your fuel pump. Spend a little more money and either get a GM one or make sure the new pump can accept the flex fuel option b/c with this 10% ethanol on fuel it is killing the pump seals. I changed the one i replaced a few years ago about 2 months ago since the same thing starteed to happen. I found out that i should have purchased the more expensive one in the first place. The one with flex fuel capabilities will come with a new wire harness you must install, make sure you splice it and cover wires very well, heat shrink tune is best. Good Luck.
