i have a tonneau cover for my truck. i want to put an in bed tool box under it to house a hydraulic system that will operate opening and closing both bed cover and tail gate. i figure ill need:

1ea vented reservoir

1ea pump

1ea battery

1ea electric motor

1ea alternator

2ea 3 position selector valves

1ea 2 position selector valves

5ea small actuators

3ea relief valves

2ea plunger style grounding switches

various tubing, hose, and fittings

some type of electrical sequencing

key fob to operate it

i want the electric motor that drives the pump to have an alternator tied in to the system like a serpentine belt to charge the battery while the system is running. i want it to be electrically sequenced so i can hit one button on the key fob to open and one to close. when it opens i want it sequenced so that when i press open it raises the bed cover. then when that hits the stop switch it unlocks the bed, then the actuators lower the bed. the when i hit close i want the bed to close, lock and then the bed cover to lower. and i want the pump to automatically turn on and off when it needs to.

im a hydraulics mechanic so building it would be no problem. but what is practicality over awsomeness.

No offense, but I chose completely retarded. I can't justify the means for such a device. :D It sounds cool, I just don't see the practicality of it. :D

It may be unique but what'd be the point? You'd have so many pumps, hoses, wiring, and cylinders around that you can't actually use the bed for anything.

Why hydraulic? Can be too messy and can get complicated. Just get 2 linear motors, fab up some brackets, runs power wire and call it a day.

I say "DO IT."

I don't see where you would need an extra battery and alternator...unless you were going to be using it a LOT at one time and not starting the engine.

Like Draenor says..it may be easier and less complicated to do with electric motors.

Well you only live once!

If you enjoy doing this type of thing, then do it, live it up, and have fun!

The only thing is drop the alternator thing. An electric motor driving an alternator will not charge a battery. It is a net loss situation due to the friction of the motor and alternator and electrical losses.

If this idea would work, I could use an electric motor connected to an alternator to power my house and everybody would have one!

More on this...

hydraulics is easier for me cuz i know it like the back of my hand. and i want th batery and alternator for it so t canbe a self sustaining system

i can see where u guys getcompletely retarded from but ihad put a lot of thought in to how this would work. it would be cool. i work on C-130's in the air force. the way i planned it is the way the caro ramp and door open

oh and i dont really use my bed, its a giant trunk

no hopping an all weather chill spot is what it needs.

Since you know hydraulics build your setup that way. It seems like electric motors would be cleaner though. Just make shure to post some pictures when you are done however you do it. Who knows it could be pretty gangster. Just don't do the alternator hooked to an electric motor. Generating electricity with electricity is just completely pointless and you will never come out ahead. Just add some extra batteries hooked up to a second alternator running off the engine. There actually a few ways to power your setup that would work just fine depending on how much power you need.

    • Hello All!   My 2019 Colorado 3.6 LT, 4WD Crew Cab has approximately 77,500 miles and I recently began experiencing the well-known transmission shudder between about 30 and 65 mph. The problem had worsened to the point that I could no longer attribute it to road conditions - and I had decided to bring the truck to the dealer - when recently, I experienced a sudden loss of power while driving at maybe 40 MPH. Several warning lights flashed, the “Check Stabilitrack” message appeared, and the Check Engine, Stabilitrack, and Traction Control icons remained illuminated. The truck regained driving power, but it stayed in a low gear with unusually high RPMs for the speed. (limp mode?) Because I was only about two miles from home, driving slowly, I was able to make it back and run an OBD-II scan, which showed fault codes U0101, P0700, and U0100. My next trip in the truck was to drive it to the dealer the following day. That trip began normally, but after about a mile I experienced another loss of power, along with the same warning lights and the same “Check Stabilitrack” message. As before the truck remained driveable, but again operated at an abnormally high RPM-to-speed ratio and seemed stuck in a single gear. About a mile later, the dashboard lit up once more, this time displaying “Check 4WD.” Soon after that, I arrived at the dealer. I have verified that the truck still has its original factory transmission fluid, which means it has never received the corrective fluid exchange outlined in GM Technical Service Bulletin #18-NA-355.  That was Thursday of last week and I've heard nothing yet from the dealer.    According to Technical Service Bulletin #18-NA-355 and the build date of my truck, my truck should have the newer LV fluid. I've done a little research and read something about a problem with the wiring harness as well.   Anyone have an insights into this situation?  Thank you!!

    • Did you even read this article?   Even the title of the article says "U.S.-Iran Deal Doesn’t Mean a Swift Return of Oil and Gas Flows"   Remember, crude oil prices are based on FUTURE purchases by the oil companies.  Gas prices are based on FUTURE purchases by the station.  This article stated that many of the oil producing nations have to restart their processes to get the oil produced.  Then the oil has to be shipped to wherever.  And it doesn't get there overnight.  And most of that oil is not coming here. Check out this site:  https://afdc.energy.gov/data/10621   A graph will pop up to show where the US imports their oil from.  Notice that there isn't a lot of import from OPEC and Iraq.  Most of the US import comes from Canada. The US oil produces are selling their oil on the open market, which is why the US fuel costs went up.  So you're correct, the US oil companies are going to slow walk the price downward.
