New Silverado/

I just test drove an '09 Silverado (LT1 crew, 4wd, 6spd) and I really like the ride. The truck feels very 'tight'. I currently drive an '08 Tundra. I really like the Tundra, too. There are a couple of things that I don't like about my truck (bed boune, drive shaft clunk) but I just love the power of the Tundra. I bought it with an out-the-door price of 22.5k and they are offering me 22k for it. Now the new '09 Silverado is 38k and change but with all the rebates out the door price is 30k and change. Should I go for it? Is this too good to be true?

Asking that question here, you can be guaranteed the answer will be go for the Silverado!

My advice would be to go with whatever truck felt the best. :seeya:

Of course, my vote goes to the American Silverado! :(

If you paid 22.5k for it and there giving you 22k for it I say take it and run to the Chevy dealer, your only losing 500 bucks. Plus you will be supporting the USA. :seeya:

Brother has a new Tundra, he liked it. That is until he drove my Sierra. He is now placing an order for a 2010 and is going to trade the Tundra in.

Oh, +1 for supporting the USA :seeya:

seems like you get some good prices. what part of the country are you in? You save 22K worth of tax too on the Silverado. I have to say though, if I was driving an 08 Tundra for 22K I might just keep it. Drove my friends Tundra and thought it was nice. Powerfull too. Post some pics when you decide to get the Chevy. It will be hard to resist cause it seems like you are ready to trade. Like any brand the chevys have their weak points too. Read thru this site, lots of good info..

There's no time like the present to buy a new truck. GM trucks will always get my vote.

I'm in NC. The thing is I don't really need to trade it in but this more like a want. This would be my 6 vehicles in 6 years. I wish I could put the engine from the Tundra into the Silverado. That would be a perfect truck. I really enjoyed the ride of the Silverado. It was a bit bumpy but probably due to the z71 suspension. They are giving me 5k rebate from the GM supplier discount because this Silverado was built before the price increase. Therefore, it's like 10k off of the msrp. My credit union is offering me 4.7% financing on top of that. I think I just made up my mind and I'm going to get the black one tomorrow. For the people out there with these trucks, do you guy prefer the bench seating up front or the ones with the center console?

I prefer the bench seating of mine. I like having the more work truck looking dash and the added storage capability of the floor where the console would go.

I thought about the 6.2L but too much money even after the rebates. I do think that the GMC does look better but they also wanted more than the Silverado. I think 10k off of the MSRP is a pretty good deal. They have 2 on the lot that were produced before the price increase. One had the center console the other doesn't. They want $600 more for the one with the console. My Tundra doesn't have the console either. I guess it is nice to have a bench seat to sit the 6th person. I post some photos when I get it. Can anyone here tell me why there is so much rust on most of the GM engine? When I looked under the hood of the brand new Silverado yesterday, there were so much rust around the engine block. I did also notice some rust on the rear axle too. The Tundra doesn't have any rust at all.

Plain and simple.....They just don't put a lot of paint on them. :)

Its really nothing to worry about, except for the rear-end cover itself,You'll want to make sure you spray it with either some undercoat or paint,Its just thin stamped steel and will rust through and leak if its not protected by undercoat or paint.

Of course you shouldn't have to worry too much about it,with you being in North Carolina where theres not a lot of corrosion issues,What part of NC you from?

Most of the 5.3 engines have an iron block, but some have aluminum. To my knowledge, the crew cab 4x4 versions get the aluminum block--I know mine does. As for the rear axle, diff housing, etc., GM uses a lot of cast parts, where I (believe) Toyota uses more rolled and stamped steel. It seems to me that GM could spec that those components be painted better, but they don't see a need... and they're probably right.

I looked pretty close at the Tundra before buying another GMC. I could make a list of the reasons I chose another GM truck, but, in a nutshell, every time I test drove them back-to-back, I felt iffy about the Tundra and just smiled in the GMC. It actually surprised me, since I had been driving a GMC 5.3L for years and had thought that the 5.7/6-spd would pull me in that direction (for towing). It didn't. If I were buying brand new right now, I might glance at the Tundra... on my way to the GM dealer :)

    • Thanks @newdude, guess I'll keep looking.  Test driving so many trucks that have obvious things broken, I'm thinking "if they couldn't even be bothered to fix the power seat," what else is broken".   Just drove a 2021 where the power seat motor was grinding/binding and wouldn't do anything but make a terrible sound.   An owner that puts dents on the bumper, doesn't fix a seat motor, and had spotty service intervals (along with missing major services) doesn't give me the best of confidence.   Amazed at the number of people that will finance a $60k+ truck, run it into the ground, then trade with a loan balance (every single one had "loan/lien reported" on the CARFAX at the last year of registration).
    • Not true! I have been runing them since 2006 F250! suspension component that works as a sway bar, a traction bar, and a helper spring points directly to the RoadActive Suspension (RAS) kit. Works as a sway bar, a traction bar, and a helper spring.
    • Here's a starter kit:    CC Jensen, a Danish oil testing Concern gives us the following guidelines:   ISO 14/12/10 Very Clean Oil ISO 16/14/11 Clean Oil ISO 17/15/12 Lightly Contaminated ISO 19/17/14 New Oil ISO 22/20/17 Very Contaminated and not suitable for any service.   In addition CC Jensen gives a table showing how engine life is increased by cleaning up the oil. For example cleaning the oil from 19/17/14 to 13/11/8 will extend motor life by a factor of 6X.   But even cleaning it two “Life Extension Classes” will double motor life. So perhaps giving those classes would be useful:   21/19/16 20/18/15 19/17/14 18/16/13 17/15/12 16/14/11 15/13/10 14/12/9 13/11/8   *************************************   https://testoil.com/program-management/setting-iso-cleanliness-targets/   Third paragraph from the bottom will give a starting point.    Your next question should be, okay 10um at what Beta ratio and the answer is in the graph Beta 75.   Then the next question is what is your chosen filters profile? (Purolator PL series below) The red dot is Beta 75. This was the information I obtained from MANN a few years ago. So the best filters, Purolator One, AMSOIL EA, FRAM Ultra, Royal Purple, Bosch Premium should get a doubling engine life over filters like Purolator L, any service filter from any quick lube, WIX, NAPA, STP, Mobil 1, Purolator BOSS.    And as noted by CC Jensen a 2-5 micron @ Beta 200 bypass system has the capability of a six fold improvement. AMSOIL has such a system as does Donaldson.       Now having said all that testing is the touchstone. Test the oil NEW and test it with your chosen filter. Then test over milage. Do the work, get the result. But understand this in NOT absolute BECAUSE this is one factor in isolation.   Example:    A valve spring supplier can state that with cam X and a valve train of Y grams the valves will not float to 7K rpm. is that true if the builder choose a system 20 grams over limit? Common sense must be used and limits understood.
    • This doesn't look like a GM truck. Not needed on a HD truck
    • It varies a ton around me. Some places are still at $5.00 or higher and others are way down into the $4's.   Offroad diesel was $4.02 at the one station I passed today.
