Underhood Storage In The Spare Batt Spot

I recently purchased a 2009 Sierra, traded in a 2003 Silverado... I noticed the battery location moved leaving behind the empty battery tray at the driver's side front corner of the engine compartment. has anyone devised a way to mount a box or something there to make use of this space? I was thinking of maybe a good spot to keep my recovery/ tow strap and other small essentials that currently ride under the back seat... what say you?

I think a few of the other guys on here have made some sort of storage box/container for that battery tray area.

I also think I saw where a couple guys have bought like a small tackle box and mounted it there as well.

You can always add a battery box to the tray and use it as a toolbox. My '85 Ford actually had one as a factory option.

Look into a boat battery box- this subject has crossed my mind too. They usually come with anchors and a strap that also keep the lid on. Should be the perfect size too :rollin:

First time I looked under the hood of a GMT 900 I though the battery was missing. I naturally assumed it to be where mine is.

I really like this idea for additional storage. Seems like the perfect place to store jumper cables. Please share pictures of whatever you do.

Thanks

My 96 1/2 ton has a factory cubby or storage container in that same position actually. I know the spot looks very empty on the 09 3/4 ton I drive through work and have often wondered if a box out of a OBS truck would fit if a person wanted too. It's kind of nice thought...... I don't use it and I think on the lid it says maximum 20 lbs or so.

There is the OBS box both installed and as the kit from GM. No that is not a picture of my truck, mine looks new. It is apparently a relatively uncommon find and was available factory installed only in 96 and 97. Whoopee do, I have an uncommon factory option....... I think it's more admirable my mileage is at just over 28000 original miles..

I put a marine battery holder in that spot. I keep jumper cables, tow strap, crank flashlight, hand warmers, space blanket, few tools, etc there. Never had to go in there but just in case.

Well at least you will know where to look for the underhood rattle! I like my Gm underseat better....but it is wasted space and can help out if running an ec or rc.

I wouldn't just throw the stuff in the box. I'd get some thick foam and cut out pockets for everything so there wouldn't be any rattling or noises. Would probably be 2 or 3 layers depending on what I put in there... but for the once or twice a year it wouldn't be a big deal (put some ratchet straps on the top layer since they'd probably get used the most).
