Favorite Deer Rifle

Its that time of year again! Whats everyone pulling out the safe, closet, mattress, gun rack, etc. this year for venison?

 

I bought my 300WM a few years ago as an all-round caliber for deer, elk, chucks ( ), but I'm finding that anything inside of 100 yards is hamburger with this round (no, I haven't tried a barnes, partition or a-frame bullet yet, but plan on loading them).

 

I'm thinking of using the Marlin 336 30-30 again this season this year for what I'm sure will be another close range shot.

Whatever gets it done....any problems loosing animals with that caliber?

Come on and hunt like a real man with a gun, use a muzzle loader. I am not sure what center fire round I would use, .223.243.308.30-06.30-30, could use a 7.62x39 or 7.62x54. I'd think the 30-60 would be the best over all, a very wide range of bullets.

Thanks, but I get all the adrenaline laced recoil in need out of my 300wm pushing a 200gr bullet at almost 3000 ft/sec at the muzzle!

Remington model 760 pump. .30-06 caliber with 170 grain (self- loaded) rounds.

.300 is a little big for deer, IMO. So is my dad's .338 magnum. I got him a 270 WSM a few years ago and it's a nice gun. Never cared for the non magnum guns, and the short mags are amazing. Myself, I shoot a 25-06, which packs a punch of a -06, but shoots flatter, faster and farther than the 30-06.

I believe the 270WSM has close to the velocity of the .338.

 

Shot a basic 30-30 for years. Good short distance brush gun with the short barrel, but nothing spectacular. Just throwing a big lead out there, fairly slow, and falling fast. 30-06 falls short real quick also.

243 is the best caliber for deer, i'm more prone to an r700 30-30 or an svt dragonuv 7.62...i'd rather do waterfowl in the end though

This is Pennsylvania...one of the deer strike capitals of the world, so I'll probably end up using the 2004 Ford Explorer "company car" like I did last fall.

That's exactly what I use, complete with Luepold 4-12 scope, backed up with a Glock 10mm
