Help With Oil Filter

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if it'd be an option for me to change the filter only without losing much oil? I had my oil changed about 200 miles ago with Pennzoil Plat and would prefer not to waste this fill. However, it seems to me that I have more lifter noise at startup and that the filter used may not have the anti drain-back feature. I took it to a lube place... reluctantly (Jiffylube). I would like to grab a Wix and swap it in to see if it helps. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

You will not loose much oil just changing the filter, 1/2 quart tops.

Good deal, Wix is going in tomorrow morning... Hope it quiets the lifters a little. I have read is multiple posts that the anti drain-back filter is important in mitigating the noise.

Thanks for the help!

I have noticed that my truck is picky when it comes to oil filters as well. I have had the best luck with K&N/Mobil 1 filters myself. Hope it fixes your noise as I know the one that you speak of - it drives me nuts!!

Just grab a new filter and a new qt of PP and you will be good to go. Change out the filter and top it back off.

The anti drain back feature is used for oil filters that have to be mounted horizontal so they will not drain back due to its position. The ADBV doesnt even come into play on a vertical mount filter.

Not saying that the filter may not be your problem, however, the ADBV feature isnt coming into play on a vertical oil filter setup.

When you remove the filter, notice how much oil runs out of the block. This oil will drain in and out of a no ADBD filter causing a pause in filling the filter and building oil pressure on start up. Why do you think GM engineers would go to the trouble of specifying an OEM filter with an anti drain back valve.

I am no engineer when it comes to this but I will tell you what I have been told by the engineer at Wix that I know. The AD valve is important on certain engines no matter how the filter is mounted. On our engines and others with the filter mounted upright, it allows oil to remain in some of the passages where it would otherwise drain back.

Again, I asked this same question and was told that if it is desiged in from the OE, it is vital that it be there.

I've tried AC Delco, Mobil 1, and WIX/Napa Gold and couldn't isolate the oil filter as a cause/remedy/mitigating factor in the start-up lifter knock. I've had the knock with all 3 filters. I settled on WIX/Napa Gold as my filter of choice but still have the noise once in awhile.

Ended up with the Mobil 1... Coundn't find the Wix or Napa Gold in my area in stock. Interestingly I first purchased a K&N from Autozone based on the part number supplied in their book on hand. Ended up being the wrong application, I was able to take it back even though I tried to use it and the only filter they had in stock was the Mobil 1. I will see if this helps. I'm leaning towards the filter as the cause as the noise as it did not occur on the factory fill from 0-1200 miles, only after the new PP fill. I doubt that PP is the cause but who knows... Thanks much for the advice!

Everything I read said the K&N and Mobil 1 is the exact same filter...just a different color and a welded nut. I use the Mobil 1 since it is $1 cheaper. The reports I read said Mobil 1/K&N and Pure One were the best. It ends up filters are just like tires...several brands, but a few manufacturers.

I would doubt it is the Pennzoil that is cousing the issue...I have used PP for years and really like it...

I used a Delco AC Filter, as s[eced by GM....never had an issue

I have a little lifter clatter at startup with my '08 6.0L motor. I don't think the problem lies in the brand of oil or the filter. It's in the lifters. Maybe they drain down a little or that's just the way they're made.

And if you can possibly avoid it at all, don't go to quick lube places like JiffyLube. I would go to a dealer before those places. GEt a good brand of filter like the Wix, the Mobil-1 or K&N or even an AC Delco filter. Another decent filter is the Bosch or Champ filter. Stay far away from Fram or the store cheapies like STP.

When you go to replace your oil filter, add oil into it before installing. Pour oil in to near the top and let it sit for a minute. The oil will drain down into the filter then add some more and screw it on. That way you won't have to add oil later. Don't forget to lightly lube the rubber seal before installing!!
