Ford Bumping Up Hp/torque On New Diesel

General Motors Co. is enlisting its dealers as it fires back in a horsepower battle between diesel-powered heavy-duty pickups.

Ford will begin production this week of the most powerful diesel engine ever installed in a heavy-duty pickup, Barb Samardzich, vice president of powertrain engineering, said today in a statement released here at the CAR Management Briefing Seminars.

Dealers will make sure pickup buyers who purchased Ford's brawniest truck over the last four months get the power boost, too.

The 6.7-liter Power Stroke V-8 turbocharged diesel powering the 2011 Ford F-Series Super Duty, introduced in April, will be upgraded to 800 lbs.-ft. of torque and 400 horsepower, an increase of 65 lbs.-ft. of torque and 10 horsepower.

Ford's powerplant had fallen behind a competing engine offered on General Motors Co.'s heavy-duty pickups. The Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD and GMC Sierra 3500HD come with an optional Duramax 6.6-liter turbodiesel V-8 that puts out 397 hp and 765 lbs.-ft. of torque. Now the F-350 Super Duty can reclaim bragging rights in those categories.

Fuel economy is expected to improve at least another 2 percent, making the 2011 F-Series Super Duty 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel a full 20 percent more fuel efficient than the 2010 version. The improved torque and horsepower mean that a driver can get to a higher gear faster and stay in it longer, both of which aid fuel economy.

Besides selling the upgraded engine in new Super Duty pickups, Ford will provide the upgrades free to all current owners of a Super Duty diesel pickup. Customers will receive letters explaining the procedure -- a 30-minute software adjustment to the pickup's powertrain control module -- and inviting them to visit their dealerships for the upgrade.

The upgrade program will begin by Aug. 31 and continue for the next 12 months. All 2011 Super Duty diesel pickups in dealer inventory also will receive the upgrade.

Marc Cross, co-owner of Jordan Ford in San Antonio, Texas, endorsed the program in a statement.

“It's human nature to say, ‘Darn, I should have waited,'” Cross said in the Ford statement. “But with this program, there's no penalty for being an early adopter, so to speak.”

Wow.. thats impressive. Cudo's to Ford.

GM could easily do the same thing.... but won't.

Oh wow 3 more HP and 35 lbs of torque, nothing thats going to make a differance plus the frontend of the truck is just flat out ugly.

Yeah, it makes the Current Dodge Dakota look GOOD!

Don't worry...I'm sure GM will do what Ford always does and just erase what the numbers were before and just write in what ever comes to mind.

Or...GM will continue to boost the superior D-Max power levels...Forcing Ford to do the same...and we all know what happens when Ford insists on winning the "numbers on paper" war? You get the 6.0 PSD...which was very unreliable.

The new 6.7 is nothing special...drinks fuel, is loud/unrefined. Typical Ford garbage.

hmm so the arms race begins....maybe this will lead to a revolution of zero torque management in vehicles and stronger components...or ford will issue this upgrade and will quickly deissue it once motors and trans start dieing.....does anybody else wonder if mike rowe really drives a ford?

Actually fords new SD is pretty much silent (I personally like hearing the powerplant) but otherwise i have to agree with the other post. The new diesel SD are quite a 180 from the previous 2 engines and pretty nice trucks IMO. I really like what they did with the new info screen in the new gauge cluster.

The GM Duramax is quieter....and an all around better engine.

Jeez...let it go.

Nothing but a marketing ploy. I have rode in several 2011 Ford HD King Ranches as they are becoming very popular in my work parking lot. Trust me, no HP torque is needed before the upgrade. It is very impressive in it's current version. I just hope GM will match or beat it. We all win when the competition heats up.

+1

Here you are.. Bullshitting again. I've stood in front of a new 2011 King Ranch with the 6.7L PowerStroke, and a 2011 6.6L Duramax. Hands down, the 6.7L was quieter than the Duramax.

Man, sometimes I wonder what's going on inside that thick head of yours. Keep on driving your POS. With what you drive, you have no right on talking smack to the heavy duty trucks.

Not according to the reviews.

Have you seen the recent HD truck shootout from www.pickuptrucks.com where the GM diesels won both the 3/4 ton SRW category and 1-ton DRW category? It's pretty clear that the 2011 GM HDs have a superior frame and superior diesel.

Why is my truck a POS? This is the second time I have asked the question...are you going to give me an answer troll?

Oh...sell the Caddy.....and go buy a Navigator.

    • The truck is a 1995 Chevrolet S10 Blazer, 4.3 VIN "W" engine. :cracks knuckles:   On a whim - because I needed a headache - this truck was for sale so I stopped to take a look. Doesn't run. Well, it does, but barely. Long crank, choppy idle, bad misfire(s), it REEKS of fuel. I can DO this..I'm thinking. Diamond in the rough. One owner until last year. A young guy is selling it, he bought it 6 months ago. It stranded him more than once, he's got a newborn. It was in the shop 10 days ago and he "thinks" they said it needs a new fuel injection system. He can't put any more money into it, needs it gone. I was thinking of upgrading my Macbook, which is a total want, not a need. For less than the price of a new laptop I can have fun for months tinkering on this truck and enjoying it. I'm taking this truck home. The guy was beyond thrilled, his wife was there, she thanked me profusely, I could tell they were hurting. They seemed like good people in a bind.   Some parts, a wash, maybe a set of tires, and I can have a few months of fun and then turn it for beer money (or the next project).   Sure enough, there's a work order from a shop last week in the INCHES of paperwork on this truck dating back to when the first owner bought it. They put a new distributor in it, fuel injection work describes basically opening the plenum and putting it back together. He said he couldn't afford any more work so he had them button it up and that's when he put it up for sale.   I'm not well versed in 4.3. I did discover 1995 uses the 1992-1995 SCPI "Spider" injector which is riddled with issues from splitting lines, clogged or cracked poppet valves and plastic spider legs that crumble over time. Cool. I'll just order me a ne---. Oh, the auto parts store doesn't have it? Rock Auto doesn't have it. eBay? $$$$$$ for used. These are UNAVAILABLE period end of story unless you know "a guy" who's still got one in a box somewhere.   Can't upgrade to the '96-'04 injector, it's a different plenum, wiring/pinout and sensor config.   There are a few kinda "know a guy" -guy rebuild services for these injectors out there for about $350. Okay, Okay... I'd like to know if anyone has used them? Anyone got a lead on these crappy 92-95 spiders?   I also don't want to send MY spider to Narnia and back without knowing if that's truly the problem. I guess I'll need to pull apart the plenum and do some digging.   I was also thrown for a loop. This 1995 model year truck has an OBD-II connector. The interface is decidedly not OBD-II. I can read and reset trouble codes and view live data, but there's not a lot of data. Like misfire count and on what cylinder, that's not there. It's OBD-1.5.   Nothing is ever easy. Now it makes sense why this guy wanted to disappear this thing for cheap. I'm guessing the shop told him the injector is toast, the part is unobtainable and they're not going to sort sending the thing to a rando offering rebuild service on craigslist, and the kid likely can't be without a working car for 3 weeks even if they'd facilitate that.   Experience with these early SCPI's? Stories? Things to check? Sympathy? (..Nah...)   This can sit until I sort it. But I haven't had a problem with a vehicle I couldn't easily solve in a long time.
