Gmt900 Remote Start Authorization Code W/ Ap8

Well I thought I would make out by buying two key fobs for my truck that were remote keyless entry and remote start off ebay since all I received was one keyless entry remote when I bought it. I have the AP8 RPO Code so the remote start "brain" is in there.

I went to the dealer and asked them to program the remote start fobs to my truck since the lights only flash when you hit the lock/start buttons. They said it did not work because I needed their $250 kit (+installation) that included 2-way remotes/antenna/upgraded items.

They had it in stock so I asked to see it, they opened the package and it was the two remotes by part number that I had in my hand and directions. Nothing else....so heres the kicker there is a printed authorization code on the instructions booklet and that is the only way I can install the remotes.

How do you get the remote start code without buying the $250 kit?

I think this is B.S. that GM puts the "brain" in the truck for remote start and you cant just turn it on.....you have to pay them the $250 + Labor $$. The dealer said they take that code and call GM who will then authorize that code rendering my truck usable through a TECH2 update.

Anybody have any experience with getting that auth code??

What are my options?

Also interested in this, my truck has the AP8 RPO.

ETA:

Here are my RPO Codes, with what I assume to be the code in question:

Most shops that can reflash Engine computers can turn the remote start function on or off. I usually charge about $100 to reflash a PCM. I may be wrong but I doubt you need anything more then that.

Dealer told me GM needs to be called, given the "Authorization number" That comes in the kit, which IMO is basically like a CD key for a computer game (Yes, I legally bought it, now I want my product to work please), GM rebuilds the RPO codes/adds remote start to list of factory options, and reflashes the computers with the rebuilt parameters. Until the computers are reflashed, the system doesn't know it has remote start. The dealer told me the remote start add ons were a PITA because more than one computer had to be reflashed.

Dunno how true that all is though, just dealer/tech talk while BSing about adding factory fogs, which they told me were a waste of money. Dealer said buy an aftermarket set and light bar instead. Go figure.

How do you know WHICH AP8 code ? I checked, and there are like 10 different AP8 codes

On my build sheet.. my Remote Start is code AP3.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think:

AP3 is factory INSTALLED remote start

AP8 is Remote Start PREP package (Can be added later).

Only the dealer can install the remote start. You have to buy the remote start package from GM, and it

comes with two key fobs and instructions. The instructions have a unique code that comes with them & the

dealer has to use this key to get a special VIN specific code from GM. This GM code is then used by the tech

to activate and unlock the remote start in the BCM.

That is why you can't just buy the key fobs without the special code. GM will not give out the unlock code without

being given the one from the OEM package.

Once it is unlocked in the BCM you can then use any R/S key fob without having to go through this procedure again.

There are a lot of threads on the forum about this I would search through them.

The way I understand it is that authorization code allows the dealer to call GM, and get the software update to add remote start to your system.

AP3 I thought was the prep for the 2 way remote start system and the AP8 was prewire for basic remote start.

Maybe one of the dealer techs will chime in and clear this up.

Two-way remote? Mine are just the regular 3-button remote. Remotes don't beep or have a screen or anything, I believe they're only one-way. When I bought the truck, I actually got the dealer to throw in a second remote, as I was under the impression they come with two from the factory.. 2 keys, 2 fobs. The second one was brand new, apparently the remote star fobs are pricey..good thing they paid for it lol

I will have to see what's up when I get my truck. I was told that rather than order the PDD Exterior Plus Pkg. I could have the remote start added after the fact. The procedure described is the same as above. A price was mentioned, but I don't recall it. I guess I'll have to see if AP8 is on the glovebox door as it doesn't show up on the invoice or window sticker. Looking @ the 2011 brochure, neither option appears other than remote start is part of the LT Exterior Pkg.

Also comes in the AllStar packaage. 2011 allstar pack comes with fog lights, ez lift tailgate, tailgate lock, remote start, rear parking assist, int plus package (usb for radio, bluetooth, power driver seat etc) and towing package. Good deal. The 2011s with all star package have the same sticker price as my 2011 lt which has int plug package and hd towing package, but NOT the ext plug package.

I have remote start on my truck and the AP3 code. I Do Not have AP8 listed. I received 2 keys and 2 regular fobs (3 button no screen) at purchase. If I purchased the 2 way fob (with screen), would I have to do anything, besides the regular programming to my vehicle, to have the 2 way remote work fully?
