  1. It's not urban legend. Depends on what type of ball and mount is plugged in, but on some the small gate can hit when opened. Some mounts have enough offset that the ball is below the centre section even if when open -- of course offset should selected to match trailer requirement. Otoh, I've pulled trailers that have a non-swivel jack that an traditional tailgate will hit. Curt makes an add-on interlock that detects if ball mount installed and interrupts circuit that releases the centre section. I've bashed enough shins/knees over the years that part of unhooking the trailer is removing the ball mount.

  3. Currently, the only way to get the 10 speed in an LT or an Elevation is with the 3.0. Currently, lowest trim with 5.3L 10 speed combo is the 4wd SLT. 5.3L 10 speed isn't currently offered in silverado, and is currently discontinued on lower trim sierra's. all 3.0's have the 10 speed -- LT, RST, LTZ, HC, SLE, Elevation, SLT, AT4, Denali all 6.2's get the 10 speed (also all 6.2's are 4wd) -- CustomTB, RST, LTTB, LTZ, HC, SLT, AT4, Denali
  4. In defense of GM, the 'epa' numbers are the numbers that represent a specific 'route' of speeds/loads/grades/etc. The method is mandated in the federal regulations. The intent is so to vehicles can be compared under 'average' conditions -- although the typical use of 2 owners is probably not the same. But if driver A gets better mileage in vehicle x than vehicle y, it is likely that driver B will also get better mileage in vehicle x than vehicle y. I do a lot of drives on rural 2 lane with very little elevation change, and frequently trips are out and back, so no net elevation change. Some of the destinations can be all 2 lane, or 2 lane with 75 or 80% 70+ freeway. I usually have the screen up that show current average, best average and instantaneous mpg for a certain number of miles (on a metric truck, that is 31 miles, I think the 'inch' trucks that is 25 miles?). Anyway, from watching this screen it is easy to see the impact of speeds, wind, trailer, grade, etc etc. I also record every tankful, and hand calculate the mpg to compare with the truck measured number. My 2011 LML provided computer mpg that was usually within +/- 0.1 mpg of the hand calculation. With 2015 6.2L, (running premium) and a 2016 5.3L max tow, the hand calculated numbers were consistently a little lower than the computer suggested. 2018 L5P was on average about the same as the computer, but the +/- variation was wider than any of the others. Only have about 1900 miles on the 3.0L, and only 4 fillups, but so far the hand calculated numbers are higher than than the computer. Now to your question. Doing the same daily driver duties: With the 2015 6.2 and 2016 5.3 max tow I was disappointed if the hand calc was less than 20 usmpg. Usual was between 20 and 20.5. 2018 2500 with L5P usual mpg was about 17.5 -18. 2021 3.0L - only 4 tanks, but so far 24.5usmpg. It hasn't made any long trips yet, and we are using 'winter fuel' here, so I expect improvement in the warmer weather All of them do considerably better when cruising at steady speed than what the tank averages suggest. Towed a 7x14, tandem axle, enclosed trailer, (total weight about 4000lbs?) from Port Huron to Phoenix, interstate speeds with the 5.3L max tow. Average mpg was less than 10. The 2500 dmax plays with the same trailer and load. Still have the trailer, but haven't pulled it at highspeed/long distance with the 3.0L.
  5. The 3.0L will get you the 10 speed in an LT. (with the 5.3 or 2.7 it would have the 8 speed, and as you pointed out the 6.2 L isn't available in an LT)) The combo is very nice to drive, and gives great fuel economy. I'm one of those 'record every tankful' types. Doing the same daily driver job, I'm getting about 20% better than I did with 6.2 and 5.3 that I ran for a couple years. Except for that couple years, I've been running mostly duramax trucks for 15 years, and am yet to come across all the extra maintenance expense that is always mentioned in these threads. They've reduced the 3.0L pricing. It was same as the 6.2L, but was reduced (by $1500) and is now about $1000 over the 5.3L. I've not driven either one, but there lots of owners happy with both the 4.3L and the 2.7L. If you haven't found it there is a thread about towing with the 2.7L Turbo that you might want to read. I'm really liking the 3.0L / 10 speed.
  6. As others posted, this is incorrect. The 6.2 is available on the SLT, AT4 and the Denali ( on any of them it requires 4wd, but given the jobs listed I'd assume your planning 4wd anyway). Not sure what year you dad's 5.3 was, by there have been several generations of the 5.3 over the last 20 years. If you are even thinking of getting an elderly family member into the truck, go to a dealer and get into one of the 2020+ HD's and then into an SLT or Denali 1500. The AT4 1500 has a 2" factory lift. Even with the lift, it is not as high as 2020" HD's (all the HD's are the same height, there is no 'factory' lift version in the HD's) I'm really liking the 3.0L. Current pricing puts it between the cost of 5.3L and 6.2L. All 3.0's and all 6.2's have the 10 speed. The 10 speed is no longer available on some trims behind the 5.3. Tow mirrors can now be added without ordering a 'package' of other items.
  7. With factory install, (mirrors/harnesses/programming) the amber lights in mirrors should be on whenever the marker lights are on. They will blink with the blinkers. The rear facing lights depend on the setting, but they work with the cargo lights. (OM has details, but setting is changed by repeated cargo lamp button presses) The older type trailer mirrors had red arrows on the glass (and lots of complaints about them) but the T1 version doesn't have them.

  10. There have been other threads about this issue. So far, I haven't read a solution to change to anything beyond the ones they offer. OTOH, we have more than one vehicle using 'profiles', and they do move between vehicles.

  12. Picture shows it has 24,000 miles, so if it's two years from new purchase it's still under 3/36,000 bumper to bumper. Failures happen, it's how dealer handles it that is important. What are they proposing for the next step in diagnosis/repair?

  14. If it makes you sleep at night, it's worth it. Imo, extended warranties don't make economic sense. They are offered because they make money for the seller....who would be out of business if they weren't making money.

  19. Instantaneous torque capability isn't the same as 'long period of time' torque capability. Duty cycle requirement in the HD segment will have a much higher percentage of full load than in the sport world.

Cut and past from the GM notice posted elsewhere: Some 2020 Silverado, Sierra; 2020-2021 Camaro; 2021 Corvette, Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, and Escalade models equipped with the 5.3L engine (RPOs L82, L84), 6.2L engine (RPOs L87, LT1, LT4, LT2), or 6.6L engine (RPO L8T) may have a misfire and engine noise condition. The Check Engine MIL also may be illuminated along with several possible DTCs, including DTCs P0300, P0106, P0506, P3189, P318A, P318B, P318C, P318D, P318E, P318F, and P3190. These conditions may be due to a broken valve spring. If it’s determined during an inspection that the engine has a broken valve spring, a cylinder leakage test on the affected cylinder must be performed. 5.3L and 6.6L Engines On 5.3L and 6.6L engines (RPOs L82, L84 and L8T) built from June 1, 2020 to October 7, 2020, if cylinder leakage is not observed, replace only the affected valve spring. (Fig. 13) 6.2L Engines On 6.2L engines (RPOs L87, LT1, LT4 and LT2) built from June 1, 2020 to October 7, 2020, if cylinder leakage is not observed, replace all valve springs on both cylinder banks.
  21. Immediate fix -- don't plug it in unless is below 0*F (-18C) According to this from 13 months ago there is an update coming --- don't know if it's released. I've been running 6.6's for many years. They live outside and get started every day. The are never plugged in. Frequent winter temps 0F -10F. I have no intention of plugging my 3.0L for those temps either. This is it's first winter. So far coldest start was about 16F (-9*C). The Check Engine MIL also may be illuminated. Fig. 12 Currently, an engine calibration in the Engine Control Module (ECM) will falsely set DTC P0111 (Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor 1 Performance), which occurs when the engine block heater is used in ambient temperatures above 0°F/–18°C. As a result, the cooling system will go into remedial action and turn on the cooling fans at 100%. The remedial action will continue until the engine goes through a six hour cold soak. If this condition is found, clear the DTC and return the vehicle to the customer. Do not perform any further diagnosis or replace any related components. An updated calibration will be available shortly. Also inform the customer to avoid engine block heater use in temperatures above 0°F/–18°C. While the owner’s manual states an engine block heater should be used in temperatures less than 0°F/–18°C, it isn’t vital until much lower temperatures of less than –13°F/–25°C.
  22. Nope. It's 8.1 was no where near the torque capability of the HD 10 speed either. 6.6L LT8 401 Hp 464 ft-lb 8.1L L18 340 Hp 455 ft-lb (for 2001/2/3; 2004/5/6 were lower) I'm thinking they need a different transmission to match up with the LT8
  23. 1500 one is too light 25/3500 one is too heavy. They need a 3rd one that is 'just right' for the HD duty cycle at the LT8 torque level.

  25. That's one of the reasons they went to DFM. Many many modes, more seamless/harder to detect. Change change number constantly.
