Egr Valve

Whenever the EGR valve is connected, while cruising between 30-40 mph and deccelerating just by not giving any gas, my truck's rpms drop almost all the way to zero and then bounces back up with the truck almost stalling. When the egr valve is unplugged the truck runs normal. I have already cleaned the valve but the problem continues (if plugged in). Does this mean the valve itself is bad and should be replaced or could it be some other component related to it? How can i diagnose before i buy a new valve at $120! Any help is apprecitad, thanks. 2000 Silverado Z71

Testing instructions would be in a GM Factory Service Manual set for your year/model vehicle. You can order that from helminc.com or a GM dealer.

I don't know how your specific EGR valve works (vacuum/electrical?), but a lot of gizmos on newer vehicles are electric and you would test them with a multimeter. So need to know how to use a multimeter. It says in the factory books, but here is more...

I doubt his EGR valve is electrical, as these cost $ 300 and up to replace. It is probably a simple vacuum diaphragm type. valve. If it is a vacuum operated valve, it can be tested with a hand held vacuum pump. Also, the valve must close by spring pressure when the vacuum is released. If there is carbon build-up on the valve stem, it may stay permanently open, which would cause very bad performance.

Its an electronic egr valve, and i've already cleaned it and the problem persists.
