Any Towing Problems With

Hey, Im looking into purchasing a 26 foot travel trailer ASAP...i was curious if anyone has any problems with the NBS's towing?(07 1500 5.3 CC). My main concern was the electric fans while towing? how do they hold up as in keeping the motor running normal temp?

Thanks

You main concern should be what a 26 footer weighs. Towing with a half ton crew cab is not unlimited. If that trailer has slide outs... you may be overloaded.

Trans temps are critical. Make sure you have a good cooler.

+1 on both points. Your diff. gearing plays an important part in your towing ability too.

Off to bed Jim!

Hey, The trailer weight is 5500..it has one slide out.

Also with these trucks you should always tow in 3rd gear correct?

thanks again

Travis

Also forgot to mention truck has 3.73s. i do have the factory towing package too..

I have a 18Ft camper and have also pulled my father in laws 24ft. The 5.3 has no problem pulling that kinda wieght. I also tow in drive and turn on tow haul. Thats what its there for.

I have my 16ft trailer I I pull loaded with 4 atv's, and gear in the tool box, I need to see how much It weighs, but I can definately tell it's back there, especially in the hills of southern ohio, and kentucky, I always monitor my trans temps quite a bit, and they are not outrageous, but it's been a while, and I don't remember what they were, but with a trailer that much bigger, I would reccomend an additional cooler

Also I presume your trailer is a fifth wheel

You'll have no problems. If you see the truck shifting alot in/out of overdrive, then just pull it down into 3rd. Use your tow/haul button and you'll be fine. 5500 lbs shouldn't be any problem for the truck. Just make sure you have a good ebrake and some type of distribution hitch.

Congrats on the camper.

If that is "dry weight", then once loaded, you're going to be near the weight that I'm at. I pull a 31' camper that, loaded, weighs in a ~7k lbs... and I live in East Tennessee, with plenty of hills and a few mountain climbs. With everyone/everything on board and ready to camp, I'm pushing 13k lbs. This is getting near the upper limit for the 5.3/4-spd/3.73 IMHO, but it handles it just fine. Tow in 3rd, unless you're on flat ground. For significant mountain climbs at highway speeds, drop to 2nd and pull at 50 - 55 mph. The key is to keep the rpms up high enough that you aren't lumbering the engine. It also keeps the transmission cooler. Too many people I've spoken with try to run low rpms on a gas engine for fuel economy. In a word, don't.

The more significant thing to consider (much more important than power) is your load distribution and sway control. Tongue weight can easily push you up to your payload rating (I'm bumping it myself). I highly recommend the Reese Dual-cam distributing/sway setup. It works very well. If you have questions, post them... there's a few of us on here that tow campers.

What he said ^^^^^

Also look into air bags. I have Firestrone bags, best investment I made. The electric fans will keep up to the cooling needs. I've towed in 110 degree heat, with AC on and no issues. You can also look into tuning the truck, there you can get fans adjusted to come on stronger and sooner. I have a DiabloSport Predator and since I had a real winter here I have summer tune with more agressive fans and a winter tune that has stock fan settings.

Towing is not a race.

I'd think you are under the limit with 5500 pounds and 3.73 gears. Just make sure you don't load it with another thousand pounds of crap. With a 5500 pound trailer, you're gonna want to think "pack light". You'll be stressing the truck quite a bit when towing but it will do it. Not a big deal unless you intend to tow thousands of miles... then you would really need to consider a 2500.

I know there are those who tow heavy with half ton trucks but just because they do it doesn't make it right or safe. It takes a big toll on the truck's longevity over time... Half ton truck trans & brakes aren't designed for anything more than occasional heavy towing. Overall I'd say you should do fine going on a few several hundred mile camping trips.

Whatever you do... DON'T LISTEN TO THE CAMPER DEALER. They will sell you anything you want to buy as long as they can hook it up and you make it off of the lot. They are just as bad as car dealers.

5500 lbs on a 26 footer with a slide sounds like dry weight.my last TT was a 27 footer w/slide & it had a gvw of around 8k, dry was around 6k IIRC..look at the veh info sheet inside one of the kitchen cabinet doors, that'll show you the gvw & cargo capacity of the unit...

I don't think you should have any trouble pulling that trailer with that motor and gearing. But you do have to consider how much additional weight you add to the trailer. If your truck is rated for 7500lbs, thats total, including extras to the trailer and truck. I have a 30ft, dry weight of about 6000lbs. I have the 6.0L with 4.10, so that gives me lots of room to play with. I use tow mode on my programmer so I don't use tow/haul mode on the truck and I keep it in over drive. Also the equalizer hitch is a big deal. My tongue weight of trailer is about 700lbs so I have a good hitch that transfers that weight, which helps sag and wear on your rear tires. The 2" rear block in the back helps as well.

Hey, Thanks for all the helpfull info!

i do have a diablo programmer with "diablew custom tune",RC leveling kit and 285/75/R17 Nitto Terra Grappler tires,Trueflow intake. The truck has plenty of power i was just curious about the electric fans while towing weight.

If anyone knows California, my truck has gotten a tad warm EMPTY going up the grape vine on the I5 freeway in 110 Degree weather..and also it has gotten up to about 215 degrees on the 14 freeway with my bed full of riding stuff..(a quad,2 dirtbikes and some other things) and both times was with the air conditioning on. I havent had any problems with the truck getting hot going up big inclines with the Air conditioning off.

Also where would be the best and cheapest place to find some air bags?& i was looking into the Prodigy brake controller too.

Thanks for all the help

Travis

    • You can install tailpipes that direct the exhaust sideways vs the OEM one that goes straight back. There are several on the market, do you own research. HOWEVER, you need to make sure the Venturi vents are still intact, otherwise it will throw a engine code. There is a sensor somewhere that detects back pressure on the exhaust. And if it doesn't collect the correct metrics, it will throw the truck into limp mode.
    • "Teardown" is complete. Head surfaces are clean and ready, new intake is prepped and ready. Coolant drained and water pump is removed, radiator is removed, new hoses and pump are ready.   The replacement intake is also from a '95 (with I think 260k, the odometer said). Noticeably less pitting where it covers the rear coolant passages. I'm not sure if that's a tribute to more frequent use, more frequent coolant changes/upkeep, or if the intake was machined at some point. But it appears I found a good one.   My coolant hoses were original, and the lower hose still retained the factory spring inside. It's not really rusty, but it's got deposits all over it. Unsure if I should re-install it (will thoroughly clean it first). Someone said hose technology has gotten better since 1995 (has it?) and I don't need the spring. I think modern EPDM is what made those hoses last from 1995-2026, so it's a question of how much suction can the water pump really pull, and will it collapse the hose without a spring?   I'm stopped and waiting for parts, however.   When I first brought the truck home, the fan was intermittently hitting the radiator shroud. I could see someone had monkeyed with the shroud (put a bunch of cardboard as a spacer between the upper/lower shroud halves. Someone said the motor mounts have likely failed and the engine has sagged. I wasn't sure I believed that. The engine is really solid in its mounts: To remove the old intake I *just* nearly permanently welded to the heads with freshly cured RTV and gasket snot two weeks ago, I literally had to use the arms on my lift and a chain with a bolt attached to the intake to pull it loose. It almost picked the front of the truck off the ground before ....scuuuuuuuuuuup.... I could actually hear the gaskets tearing and it broke loose and the whole truck settled back down. Motor barely moved.   SO, those parts I'm waiting on... The lower radiator mounts/bushings had completely failed. The radiator needs to be insulated from the rad support, and the bushings help the rad stand at the correct height. The plastic "baffle" was also destroyed at some point. Someone had attached the shroud to it incorrectly, overlapping a joint that should have been underlapped, creating another suspect issue potentially causing things to hit the fan. Broken tabs, side is busted off, and it's perma-formed/bent where it was jimmied incorrectly.   The baffle? Unobtainum. Long since discontinued from GM, of course. Aftermarket/capa/chinese? Also unobtanium. In GM's infinite wisdom, it appears there are at least two different variations whether the Blazer is 2 or 4 door, and I can't yet tell if they shared the same part with the S-pickups. Plan B, if I can't find a viable used one, will be to create a bracket to re-assemble the critical joint I need to seal a gap with the shroud. But that will bug me, it won't be...perfect.   The water pump bolts appear to have been installed with...plumber's putty. I guess, sure, if it works...? I've found a few "backyard fixes" like that. Someone's been here before....   If I can't find someone to jam bamboo under my fingernails to fill my free time this week I think I'll install the driver's power window motor and replace the rear door speaker that's inop. I've got a genuine GM "9.5" ohm working replacement. Why GM used a non-standard resistance....nevermind. Of course they did, you can get more sound from a cheap factory amp that way.   And the saga goes on...
    • // Thank you, also for your  response. More information is always good. This 2013 GMC is most likely my 'forever truck"-I'm 77 and retired...and truck only has 42K on it-very clean-so I try to keep it that way.  Tks again for your  response- glenn
    • I started my install this weekend. Everything was pretty straight forward but I ran into one issue with running power through the firewall. The nipple grommet on my High Country already has a small harness running through it - has anyone else ran into this issue? And on the engine bay side, does the wire basically just penetrate the factory wiring boot? I did this on my '22 Trail Boss and it seems much easier but thats been a few years. My other thought would be possibly drilling a new hole adding a rubber grommet just to the lower left of the factory hole. Thoughts?   Has anyone used a T-harness off the Bose amp and obtained power from there? It seems a little odd that such a small amp needs 3 power leads
    • ///// Ok--Thanks for that info--I could not find yesterday when I looked for the specs on that NAPA filter what I wanted. Their website is not very user friendly. I buy all teh filters for  our three vehicles once or twice a year. Have always run NAPA Gold on everything I own....I buy it thru my Son's account for his business-which he has a Heavy Equipment repair shop-one reason he uses NAPA so much-they have such a full line of coverage for just about anything/anywhere- He gets s  good discount because of volume bought. Anyway-Thank you -Sir for your response.   glenn
