2001 Savana Ac System Moldy Smell

Recommended Posts

Hi all, i have a 2001 Savana since new and this year the ac system smells moldy. Non-smoking van with 90,000 miles. Have done the following - 1. sprayed Lysol into the ac system intake while in max mode - no change after one day. 2. Under the hood, pulled the overflow tank loose and set aside, pulled the blower motor with 3 small screws and removed after disconnecting wire plug. reached inside and clean debri from this side of evap coil. I was able to make sure nothing was in the cowl vent area as well. There was dirt and small leaves in this area and it seemed to smell better for a day or 2... but again it still smells moldy. What can gain me access to the other side of the system? is there a drain line for the evap i can check for flow? Can i simply do more cleaning from the blower side, maybe chemicals? allowing it to drain out the normal drain? steam clean with a steam shark or the like? where is there an IPB to view other options? thanks for any help

There is a drain line from the evap box. you'll just have to look around till you locate it. You can try a product like this. Auto parts store probably will have something. You need to spray inside the evap box to get rid of your problem. One thing you can do to help eliminate mold is to turn off off your AC, but leave the fan running, a block or so before you get home. That will help dry the evap before you shut everything down. But for sure try to make sure your drain line is free and clear.

I don't know if this will help you or not. On my ford Taurus, they have a drain problem with the A/c. Mold will grow in the vent system if it is always left in MAX A/C or defrost modes. Theses settings commonly are also called re cycle or recirculation. It doesn't take in outside air. The common remedy is to remove the cabin Air filter. And set the hvac to vent or outside air. Then spray lysol or other disinfectant spray into the system with the blower on low.

While wearing a mask, reach in and switch to MAX A/C or defrost. This will trap the disinfectant in the system. Turn off vehicle and allow to sit for a hour or so.

Also, wear the mask when you restart the engine. Turn to vent again and set the blower to high. Let it sit for 10 -20 minutes.
