To my understanding, not much difference between a 1500HD and a non-HD 2500. Frame may not be the same though....not really sure.

There's no difference, model year determined whether it was badged as a 2500 or a 1500HD.

ya but there is 2006 2500's and 1500hd's.....im not arguing it just boggles me...i took a good look too i never measured the hieght of the frame either or thickness...but they both got 14 bolt rear end, 3/4 ton leaf pack, thicker torsion bars, 6.0, 4l80e, and some other simalirities...was just curious thats all.

I thought actual 1500HDs were back in 99 and 00. and after that they were all 2500s

Are you sure there were 2500's in 2006? I can't find anything showing there was; only 1500HD. regardless the GVW determines the actual model and they were all 8,600.

ya man, in canada anyways...dunno if that makes a difference. the company i work for up here in northern alberta has like 5-6 of them...then another dozen 1 tons with the 8.1. and zembonez, i dont think so man...pretty sure theyve been made them for 5 years...cuz when you go on like a parts website..and you go thru the drop menu's you pick the style of truck and the year is always last and for the gmc 1500 hd's it goes from 2001 to 2006....i also know that if you have a 2500hd you can order parts off of a "3500" non hd and they are the same...and i can use parts from a 2500 non hd...so they made them both...pretty damn sure anyways. gotta love gm's mysteries eh

the 1500HD is very close to a 2500 non-HD. The difference most times is in the rear gears and leaf springs. My dad has a 2001 GMC 1500HD and its GVW is 8600. The GMC 1500HD's in 2001 were not badged 1500HD which is odd. But the 1500HD holds its value like nothing i have seen. Of course its 4 wheel drive. The 2500 most times always has a 4.10 rear gear versus 3.73 standard in a 1500HD. Of couse they can be ordered differnetly That is the only differences I can find.

If I recall correctly...when I purchased mine ('02) the only difference was larger brakes, larger transmission cooler and the rear portion of the frame was wide/thicker. All designed to help with towing.

Since I don't do much towing I opted not to get the 2500 and instead went 1500 HD with the Z package.

The gap between the 1500 to 1500HD was much larger. I don't recall all differences on those two models.

My brother had the 04 2500HD and my dad has the 06 1500HD and the difference was in the frame. Alot bigger. But sense then my brother has moved to the 08 duramax and my dads truck just sits in the garage. He has a lovely 08 Cummins 2500 that he drives for work. It has been in the shop 5 times already.

ok... the 1500HD crewcab with 6L engine was stopped in early '07. There are some classic body style ones around but were not made in the new body style... the confusing thing is... that the 2004 2500 crewcab is the same truck as the '03 1500HD and the '05 1500HD, except maybe badges and trim....in '04 it was called the 2500 and in '05 GM went back to calling them 1500HD... these 1500HD crewcabss go back to about year 2000 in the GMT800 body style. The box was 6.5 feet, the GVW on these was 8600 lbs and they had the 8-bolt wheels/axles. The 2500HD (no matter what year in this range) had a bigger frame and GVW 9200 lbs.

Now I have an older 2500 in the GMT400 1997 style that has nothing to do with a 1500HD.... my 2500 has GVW 7200 lbs, has 6-bolt axles, 3.73 gears, and is a 2WD ext cab short box, these also came in regular cab regular box.

In the States the 1500 HD became the 2500 LD in 2004. The LD was left off the door, but it was listed like that on the window sticker. In 2005, 2500 LD's went back to being called 1500HD's. This was done on both the Chevy and GMC's. There is no rhyme or reason why GM did what they did. As mentioned before the 1500 HD's were around from 2001 until 2007 (as a "classic"). In 2003 I ordered a 1500 HD with the Quadrasteer option, it showed up as a 2500 LD. The only difference was in the door emblems.
