Question About Glass

Recommended Posts

I have an '04 Silverado and drive about 40,000 km/yr. 90% of that on the highway. It seems there's always construction and so it's about equivalent to daily driving in a sandblaster. My windshield is hazed from all the sand.

Is there any way to polish it, or do I have to replace it?

thanks

I believe there are kits out there that do that but I am not sure of the work involved?

I was thinking of replacing my old one in my 97 due to the same issue, I checked with a few windshield places and was very close to getting it done at Apple Auto Glass, I believe it was around $300.00 a couple of years ago.

$300 to replace the windshield or to polish the windshield? I just had my windshield replaced for far less than that.

Darrel and Mike, remember Irv and I live in the land of high prices! :jester:

A couple winters ago I took a rock from a transport directly on my windshield. My GM dealer replaced the windshield for $250 (which around here I thought was a great price). It's only taken less than two years for the "sandblasting" of my windshield make it hazy to look through.

My dealer told me they would replac it at cost since all I have been thru with the TSB on the seats. Cost was $225 and thats not even for GM glass, my dealer has a local company that comes in to do glass replacement. I should wait till it gets a worst before I replace it but both rock chips are in my field of few.

Not up here in Canada, and like I said, "I think" it was around $300 dollars?

... you just can't compare parts pricing from the US to Canada ... up here for some reason (I think mostly due to smaller population and the lack of competition) we get taken to the cleaners on parts prices .... just check a engine component (..say an injector or sensor) price on gmpartsdirect.com or rockauto.com ,,, and then compare it to what your local Canadian mechanic puts on your repair bill.... say a $16US part suddenly becomes $64Canadian, plus taxes.... and if you buy through a GM dealer you might as well just close your eyes and be confident that the experience will be painful.

Double check your insurance. I have free glass replacement....works for cracks, chips or the pitting you describe. Not sure how much extra I pay, but it's sure worth it here in AZ; you can't drive a year without a rock or sand storm wrecking your windshield.
