Recommended Oil For 6.0 W/over 100k

I want to put the best oil (and filter) in my 2500, but what's the best for light duty daily drivers that only do occasional heavy hauling? I work it everyday, but in construction, I mostly use it for its long bed, no goosenecks or 5th wheels.

 

Should I do an engine flush too? If so, what brand/method?

AMSOIL Signature Series! The Best hands down! Do some research on the oil and by all means visit thier site. My son is sponsored by them and his quad ( which is highly modded internally) has never had an oil related engine failure. I switched to it in all my vehicles and have had no worries since.

Any good quality motor oil today has all the benefits and good "stuff" that you would need for long engine life. The dyno oils are probably not quite as good as the synthetics, but you typically get what you pay for.

 

I have been using Pennzoil Platinum synthetic for many years with absolutely no issues....a couple of cars went over 200K miles, and the engines were excellent (even though the rest of the cars went to hell..ha).

 

I always use a GM AC Delco oil filter....one of the best.

 

I shy away from engine flushes, and have my own method when I buy a used car...I change the oil and filter when I first get the vehicle, drive it about 500-600 miles and change the oild and filter again, then once more around 1000 miles.....just to get the old junk out of it....

:omg: Is there any reason to change the weight? Is it ok to go synthetic, it the engine has always run conventional?

I would stay with the 5w30 as recommended by the GM engineers....they are smarter than I am.

 

I have changed to wynthetic in cars with as many as 130k+ miles without a problem....used to be that synthetic would cause leaks in higher mileage engines, but the manufacturers have worked most of that out with new additives....if you have it leak already, it could get a little worse with synthetic....

 

High mileage oil is ok, I guess, but I am afraid to used it because there is something in it that keeps it from being energy conserving like other oils....

I have used Mobil 1 since new 2001 2500 8.1 HD 4 whl drive crew cab. 144,000 plus miles and no problem whatsoever

Check on or ask people about RotellaT, i started using it years ago, an older guy i know work in a hd truck and large equipment garage, and once he switched to rotella. repairs and troubles are down to O. he has 546,000 on his daily driver.I use synthetic rotella

... use any good brand of synthetic oil using the oil grade/weight as recommended in your users manual (or on your oil filler cap) .. most gas engines these days run great on 5W30.... change the synthetic oil and filter at 6000 mi or 10,000 km.... AC Delco are good filters (can't go wrong there), but if you are changing filters with every oil change (like you should) then any good brand filter out there will do the job....

 

... if you have bought or inherited a used vehicle and don't know the oil change history then change oil and filter right away with any cheap oil, and then after 600 mile (1000 km) change oil and filter again with the good stuff. Don't worry about switching from regular oil to synthetic, in small dilution quantities it mixes just fine....

 

... oil weight variations from that were my Impala 3800 Series II engine which GM recommended 10W30.

 

... and I had an old Toyota at one time that spewed blue smoke on startup until I started using a 0W30 semi-synthetic blend (all year long) .... the oil seemed to seal up the cracked valve guide seals in the overhead cam.

How many miles do you have to run the factory oil {For break in} till I can run Amsoil 5W30? My truck is being built now {GMC 6.0 2500 HD}

Just to add another answer to the thread, I use 15W40 in my truck. With a leaking rear main, the thicker oil doesn't leak out as fast. Yes, I know, I need to just fix the seal. I'm getting closer to 300,000 miles, and have no issues so far.

Go to the synthetic right at the first oil change. There is no real "break in" on engines nowadays as there was in days gone by. there are many engines that come right out of the factory with full synthetic. Dexos1 GM approved oil are all synthetic blends or full synthetics now. Get the idea that it wouldn't be an issue to go synthetic right away?

I want to run Synthetic right away after the two free oil changes are done... have only 800 miles on it since December 12th and will be a bit before the oil is due. My

 

question I guess would be is about Amsoil being approved for use in my 2500 HD due to the Dexos1

Well, that will generate a thousand arguments for and against. The dexos1 spec is a good one. It primarily centers around detergents to keep the internals clean, and additive to keep oxidation low, as there is a lot of churning of the oil going on, especially engines with the AFM gig going on.

 

Now, all that being said. Just about any full synthetic meets the dexos1 spec, even if it is not on the "approved" list. Amsoil, Schaeffer, whatever. Now it comes down to your ability to deal with warranty concerns. I am a commercial fleet type of oil user. I have run hundreds of used oil samples. I can tell you this.... if you are using any of the top synthetic brands, no dealer or OEM is going to be able to determine if the oil is not compliant with the dexos1 spec, even if they send the oil sample in for analysis. And given the nature of legal actions, Federal trade laws, etc, you can be sure that if an oil claims to meet the spec, even though not on the "approved" list, it most probably does meet the spec.

 

If you have an enlarged paranoia gland, then go with one of the synthetic on the approved list. If you are not prone to losing sleep over details, then go ahead and use a quality synthetic of your choice. I have used a Schaeffer 9003D 5w30 full synthetic in my 2013 5.3L, and will in my new 2015 2500 6.0L. I have run oil samples on the oil when I changed it, and it has done a stellar job on the engine. And it is not on the approved list, yet claim to meet the spec. And Schaeffer has been making oils and lubes longer than anyone in the U.S, since 1839, so I am confident that if they say it meets the spec, it does. One does not normally find Schaeffer on a shelf somewhere, mostly because they cater more to the commercial user.

 

You are targeting using Amsoil. It is a great choice and I would use it with confidence. It exceeds the dexos1 spec comfortably. Especially the Signature 5w30 and the XL 5w30 they have.

    • Any joy with this truck seems to be short-lived.   The CEL for P0172 ("bank 1" too rich) is now "intermittent".   I'm not sure where to check, or re-check, and my energy to keep chasing problems with junk is wearing thin. The P0172 seems to set as I'm coming to a stop, completely off the throttle, when fully warm. At least, that's what it's done the 3? times it's set.   Everything appears normal on the scanner EXCEPT long term fuel trim. There's only one bank on this vehicle because it's an OBD 1.5 with only one upstream O2 sensor. At idle, it's around -16.4% and will dip to -18% occasionally at idle or off-throttle. LTFT approaches 0 when throttle is held at 2500rpm. Short term appears normal, much closer to zero all the time. The LTFT tells me the engine is running rich at idle but compensating at higher load. But, why?   The EVAP purge valve doesn't appear to be leaking/sucking fuel vapor continuously. Is it sticking just as I come to a stop and the engine is choking on fuel vapor and sets the P0172? But that doesn't explain the persistently negative LTFT. Disconnecting the purge valve doesn't seem to make any difference.   I suppose that leaves another dang issue with the fuel injector. A leaking fuel pressure regulator, a new leak in the spider, or a leaking fuel injector/poppet valve I didn't see, or a small crack in one of the spider legs.   The vacuum line leading to the fuel pressure regulator doesn't have raw fuel in it. It doesn't even smell like fuel when it's pulled off, not until you suck air through it, then you can tell it leads to a fuel component. I'd consider that normal? Nothing is signaling this is a FPR issue from the outside, at least.   The oil smells like fuel but it's not building volume. I've noticed most oil in most engines smells like fuel to some degree so it's hard to say if the smell is an issue or not. Or if the engine just still smells like fuel because the crankcase was full of it a few hundred miles ago. But it's been changed twice since that original issue of the leaking fuel line dumping fuel into the intake.   Patience is running very thin. Every win seems to be accompanied by two steps backwards, or another issue that leads to removing at least the top half of the intake manifold. Enough! LOL
    • First off you mentioned "Toyo Says" and then gave the pressures 45/50, was this some person at the tire shop that pulled those numbers out of his head ?   Now of course I can't know your exact axle weights front and rear, however I have much the same pickup as yourself other than not knowing your starting weight as per the pounds the truck rolled out of the factory at due to the options yours did or didn't come with or what you have added beyond the extra tire weight. The correct way to know 100% where a person is at is by weighing each axle with the typical weight the vehicle is driven with and that means taking into account passengers and making sure you figure in a full tank of fuel and a little grace for whatever you may put in the bed "groceries" !    I am looking at and not that it really matters as all the tire companies use the same charts anyway, but I am looking at the comprehensive Toyo tire chart in the section that your tire falls under and I know it sounds confusing but your tire is not an LT metric tire like your factory tire but instead because its a standard inch measured tire its under a different category called an LT floatation series tire. That makes a difference as LT metric tires they don't want to see run below 35 psi at highway speed where as with the LT floatation series it can be run down to 25 psi on the highway as long as the weight on the said size of tire is agreeable with or less than that minimum 25 psi. It blows many people away that how is this physically possible, an empty truck for one thing and larger tires with the same size wheel diameter have a lot more air volume so they can carry the same weight as the smaller tire with less air pressure.    So my truck, I have the stock 275/65R20 wheels and tires and I have a bit of weight in the box with a bak flip cover and a rubber bed mat and some tools and spare gas. The front of my gas truck weighs a bit more than some trucks of the similar spec due to double batteries and alternators. However with full fuel and just me in the truck I am weighted such that I can run 40 front and 35 rear and so that is what I have done since day one.    If I base your truck at or slightly below the weight of my truck, in theory with your tires going by the tire chart you might be right around a minimum of 30 pounds front and 25 pounds rear. Of course that would hit pretty much minimum cold inflation pressure one could run with that tire size and a near empty truck. If you have access to an accurate weigh scale to do individual front and rear axle weights I would suggest you do that and make sure your topped up with fuel and whatever else in the truck before you weigh it and then you will have a great starting point to work off of and figure out what your bare minimum pressures are you can safely run. If you do much in the way of hot weather high speed driving, bumping up a bit for a safety margin is never a bad idea but just depends on what type of driving you do. I will include the Toyo chart and the floatation series sizes start on page 31.     • Take an automotive stethoscope to the vacuum pump. Iirc those tick as well. 
    • This landing is worse than most. Patchy blacktop with washouts, soft gravel/sand at bottom that washes out with every heavy rain. I tell everyone to put it in 4WD. A lot of them think they can pull out their trailer in 2WD. They end up digging a hole and then putting it in 4WD.  The lake is a pristine lake and has a lot of money on it. There are several wake boats and lot of large tritoons.     • How wide are your rims?   Toyo specs 8.5-10.0-11.0 inches. My thought would be rim might be pulling the tire inwards creating a center that is more pronounced.    I also noticed that the spec sheet says max 65psi. So you could be right lowering the pressure to ~40 psi.
