496Bowtie Posted September 12, 2009 Posted September 12, 2009 I can't budge the rear rotors at all. Are the e-brake shoes holding it tight? The parts guy said you need to remove the rear axles and bearings and pound out the studs. Never heard of such a thing. Anybody know the proper way to remove the rotors?
kal el Posted September 12, 2009 Posted September 12, 2009 yes you will have to take the axle and all out, you have a floater(SEmi ?) and thats what it takes.

I did my rear brakes 2 weeks ago and I did it without removing anything besides the brake components. I've never heard of removing the axle and bearings to change the rotors...
wog2006 Posted September 13, 2009 Posted September 13, 2009 Haven't tried on my 06 semi-floater rotors, but my 96 drums had to be removed via axles by removing the hub bolts.
AJE Posted September 13, 2009 Posted September 13, 2009 I haven't done the brakes on my Sierra, but on my previous vehicles I never had to do any more than beat on them a few times with a hammer. It was a couple cars and an S-10, I've never worked on anything as big as a 2500HD though.
kal el Posted September 13, 2009 Posted September 13, 2009 hockey you are right I slipped up, they just come off after the brake hardware is removed, I saw the part about pounding out the studs and jumped the gun. You do need to remove axles to get stud. sorry for the slip.

trx680 Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 I just picked up a 2001 gmc 2500hd 2wd. Just looking to the future here but what exactly had to be removed to get the rear drum off?
