Glowing Exhaust Manifolds On The 6.0

As i noticed people talking about their manifold bolts popping out, i recalled a "problem" i was always going to ask about.

 

If i get into "action" on my truck and by action i mean, dragging with a Opel Astra OPCs, Honda Civics and such... the manifolds glow as if the EGTs are skyrocketing...

 

I recall this on my Durmax but i'd have thought this was abnormal on a gasser...

 

(not proud to say) but here's the story of how i found out the first time..

 

I was driving on a highway here in Iceland (hwy speeds here are 56mph/90kmh) and i noticed a Black Honda Civic VTi was coming up real fast, since i was doing 55 and he was doing probably a lot more i stomped it, and eventually hit the governor wich is 100mph i think at least i couldn't get any faster. He got to my drivers door and then when i hit the governor he went past but after i slowed down he slowed down more and pulled to my side and started honking, so i decided to give it a go.. 55mph and up... he honked 3 times, and i stomped it again, said goodbye and after i hit my governor he caught up again but pulled behind me, now there are only 200meters left of road until there's a roundabout so i slow down and decide to "do the" roundabout and then pull into a parking lot right outside the roundabout if he follows me wich he did and i pull into the parking lot and decide to park it on a gravel spot wich had some grass standing up from it, i get out of my truck and he comes driving into the parking lot and my Chevy is just idling. Then he rolls down the window and tells me my truck is on fire and i just replied with a "no it's not that crazy, it's just a 6.0" and then he tells me it's literally on fire. I turn around and see that the grass under the truck has caught fire and move the truck onto the pavement and open my hood to check if it has damaged anything.... i was in luck as it was on the passenger side so it didn't melt the gas tank BUT that's when i noticed the exhaust manifolds glowing, and the exhaust pipes and catalyc convertors...

 

i know it's a long story, but i think some might just get a laugh out of it

Sounds like you're running lean.

 

Do you have a tune?

Are you throwing any codes?

that's what i thought as well, but i don't have a tune and it's not showing me the CEL light....

 

i tried reading the codes on it the other day, but i think there must be a blown fuse in it or something, as it won't read or even lit up the code reader...

 

my head unit got stolen a while ago and i think this might have something to do with that, since they cut the harness...

Check your fuses. If your cig. lighter is dead so is your OBDII port

Now wich fuse is the cigarette lighter ?

I think the cig lighter fuse is located under hood on DS. Refer to your owners manual chart for location.

I think i should get a "Get out of jail free card" from the saying "RTFM" since my User Manual got stolen at the same time some ****er stole my head unit and right rear BOSE speaker.

 

But i'll definately look into this i noticed a little hole on the hose from MAF to TB so it's probably throwing a MAF sensor error code.... and that might explain a LEAN mixture !

Sounds like your running lean also or your convertor is getting clogged, I wouldnt do it no more until it is checked out or you will be asking for a melt down.

Why the hell would any fool want to steal a stock head unit? Also the manual? He did you a favor taking those speakers, bose or not, I am still not impressed with sound systems that come with vehicles as OEM equipment.

I thought the BOSE sounded real good

 

But i guess it will be ALL Alpine since i have to replace this stuff

 

But.... could the catalyc converters be clogged only after 19000 miles....

Probably not, but it could happen. If those 19000 were very hard driven miles, it's possible. The amount of time that the truck spends idling can also have an effect.
