Good Ways To Get Wax Off Of Plastic?

Hello All:

 

While the end result of my first time ever doing a claybar and wax job were somewhat successful, I learned the painful lesson about why we do not want to get wax on hard plastic like the door handles and bumper covers. Does anyone have any suggestions on a product or method that will get the white residue off of the non-smooth plastic surfaces? My truck is black so obviously it stands out rather well.

I use an old toothbrush to buff away the heavy stuff, then I use Mother's Back to Black. Stuff works pretty well I think. Good luck.

a) toofbrush + mineral spirits

b) toofbrush + goo gone...NOT goof off.

I've heard peanut butter does well for this.

Distilled white vinegar is what I use.

I use tire shine actually. Gets if off and leaves the handles shiny

Mothers "back to black" trim goop. Its in a red squeeze bottle at walmart.

I got wax all over my tailgate spoiler, and need to get it off... I'm willing to try the peanut butter but haven't yet. I like peanut butter and hate to waste it.

Turtle wax ice.... Its polish thats meant for all surface except glass.... Lasdt time i waxed my truck my door handles looked terrible, and this stuff shines em right up and cant see wax anymore... havent done it in months... and its still looks good

get painted or chrome door handles......best upgrade I did, I never have to worry about wax on my door handles again.

Mr. Clean Magic Eraser is the only thing I've used that actually removes the wax residue from plastic/rubber surfaces. Anything else I've tried (which is a lot) just covers it up temporarily.

 

Now I try to tape off most plastic surfaces before waxing. It really does makes things easier when you don't have to spend the next several days finding and removing wax all over the place. But I still keep the magic eraser foam pads around for those few spots where I forgot to tape off or where wax found it's way through. Quite handy.

I also use the Mothers Back to Black in between waxings but the Turtle Wax Ice is the best wax. Goes on easy, comes off easy and also can be put on every surface but the glass and makes all of them shine

There are others but the ice is some great stuff. You will not want to buy it due to the price but it's worth it. You will not need to get the sticky dirt attracting black trim goops and it does last through serveral washings. I just traded a 2000 in that had the black/grayish bumper cover, grill center and mirrors and it worked awsome for time I used it. Another one is an Eagle One Product.

peanut butter or olive oil. Wax is fat soluble (hence it beads up water) so the fats in these two things will dissolve the wax when you buff it with a cloth. I hope this helps.

It wasnt too expensive.... what impressed me is how far it went! I polished my truck twice allready and you can barely tell i used the bottle! I love meguiars products but ever since i tried the ice, its great!
