Towing Mirrors

Howdy.

 

I am getting ready to take the camper out for a little expedition this weekend. It is 21ft Aerolite Cub. My only worry that I have is being able to see around it. Truck is almost 7ft wide if I am correct but the camper is exactly 8ft. I DO NOT have towing mirrors, I have the heated tilt mirrors that came with the LTZ package on the truck. Since I will only tow this camper a few times per year I really dont want to replace the mirrors with towing mirrors, I am looking for options for those add-on towing mirrors. So here are my questions...

 

1. Does anybody have experience with a certain brand that worked good on a similar truck as what mine is? (its in the sig)

2. If they all suck, why?

3. Yes, I searched. All I was able to find were mirrior swaps.

Well Brad I have exactly the same mirrors on my LTZ.. I pull a 26 ft. TT.....I have no issues with these mirrors while pulling the trailer.

And you have a good line of sight down the sides of the trailer? I have not pulled it with my truck yet, I picked it up with my dads Chevy 3500 with towing mirrors.

I'm sure they make a set for the new style mirrors. I just haven't looked for them yet. They are right around $50 bucks and you can buy them at pepboys or advanced auto stores.

I have used the CIPA brand on my 2002 1500HD and they worked fine. I would not hesitate to buy the same brand for my 2009 1500.

I used those same type CIPA slide on mirrors on both my F150 and 08 1500 (different mirror models for each truck). They work well and are a good alternative to installing full time towing mirrors. They are very steady without any mirror shake. At one time you could buy them with convex glass. I have not seen the convex glass option lately. I see many trucks with them installed at campgrounds.

 

I found that nothing compares to a good set of full time towing mirrors because of the field of view that the flat mirrors in conjuction with the convex mirrors gives you. The large paddle type towing mirrors require some experience to get used to but they are great for towing a camping trailer. But they are very expensive when compared to the CIPA slide on mirrors.

If you decide to go with the tow mirrors (which I highly recommend), go with the 'slip-on' type. Much more stable.

Some of the models that use straps will shake and just drive you nuts.

Thanks Patrick, I actually just ordered a set of the CIPA mirrors. I think that is what your top picture is, right? It looks like them.

Yes, those would be them. You'll like them....they're the next best thing to 'real' tow mirrors. ;)

I have them when I haul my slide camper, they are very useful on left, but on right not, the mirror is too magnifying glass .

The slide on CIPA mirrors noted above are great, i have a set and am very happy with them, i have had the ones with the straps that you crank tight, they sucked! i now have the slip on ones and they work great, no vibration, easy to take on and off, easy to adjust. and once you have them set up you can take them off and put them back on with no adjustment needed. i took a rubber door stop and cut it up so that the screw would dig into that and not the back side of the mirror. I also have a very small bungy cord that goes from the inside of the trucks mirror between the housing and the glass, then wraps around the screw on the cipa mirror and back to the truck mirror. i am sure this is not needed but it insures the cipa mirror will not move!

 

One more note about CIPA mirrors, they are made in Port Huron, MI USA. About 7 miles from my house. So you would be supporting a american company!
