I've Got A Battery Issue...

ok last year my truck was dead out of no where a couple times and now it just happended again...my truck was perfectly fine and then i go to start it today and it was completely dead...i did not leave anything on in the truck either...does anyone know what this could be?

I know 3 people w/ 07 NBS vehicles (1 Silverado, 1 Sierra & 1 Suburban) and they have all had battery issues. Two of them had their batteries changed out under warranty, the last was over 36K and had to suck it up herself.

None of them thought the battery was the issue either....my brother drove his Silverado around for months and it left him stranded on more than one occasion. He finally took it in and they replaced his battery....not a problem since. Good luck!

im on my 3rd battery....all under warranty... and i just turned 24000 miles. same symptoms as you described. when it went in a third time my awesome dealer replaced the alternator even though it tested good and not a problem since. they said theyd rather eat the cost of the alternator than for me to be unhappy. and thats the way they should all be!

I wish I could give them to you but I have had my hand smacked over it before, and there are not many open spots in garages for me to put my tool box in.

 

If you can find a copy of pit4783 by yourself it will give a list of 9 other bullitens detailing things to look at for intermittantly dead batteries. Unfortunately you can go through all of those things and still not find it because it is intermittant. I would start off with a good battery test. Not one with that stupid little hand held electronic thing they have at the parts store. A good old fashioned load test with a carbon pile tester by someone competent enough to know the different ways a battery can die and how to test for them.

If the voltage regulator in the alternator goes bad the battery can hack it for a while. Then, without warning, the thing will go caput. I had a car that did this until I changed out the alternator. That would be my guess. Have them put a new alternator in and I bet the problem will be solved. One year is about the time I used to get out of my batteries with a bad (overcharging) alternator. They just slowly fry. Does your volt gauge read any higher than 14? I mean it shouldn't hardly go north of that center number at all.

I have two 07 nbs, my wifes yukon xl denali would play dead every two months or so. I complained to dealer with zero luck. I tried in vain to troubleshoot, figure out why. Finally after about the 8-10th time I just put a new Interstate for no reason other just to try it, and the truck has not played dead since. To my knowledge, the dealer has not upgraded the puter, but I guess is possible. My 07 Sierra Denali has never had a battery or play dead issue.

Batteries can have intermittant problems. If you are familiar with how a battery works, you can understand that internal shorts from either sediment or loose plates can cause problems that look like other problems with the vehicle. I'm not saying that is what this problem is, just that it happens and I've had it happen on at least one vehicle, maybe more. In high school, while working at a gas station, I learned a cheap trick for an old battery that wouldn't hold a charge. That usually meant that enough sediment in the bottom of the battery had accumulated high enough to short out one or more plates. We'd pull the caps off and flush the battery with a garden hose very thoroughly. Then refill with new acid (we kept it in stock) and recharge. Most batteries would take the charge and be fine for another few yrs. We only did that if the customer was down and out and didn't have the money for a new battery which was more at that gas station than you pay for one now.

pull your alt off and have it tested for bad diodes. if one is bad it will allow a small current past to ground. also have your BCM re flashed. this has been a on again off again issue since 02
