My truck already was in the shop 3 1/2 years ago for the recall and within the last year I've replaced the wheel bearings anyways, which came with new sensors. I don't believe the dealer will do the recall a 2nd time for free

I was informed on my 04 that it's not a recall, just that there's a TSB issued for it.

 

I just did the repair that GM says to do, and found it to be quite easy. The sensors are a pain to pull completely out, they come about half way and then got stuck and I had to gently use a pair of pliers to get a firm grip and get them the rest of the way out. I can see where some people have had them break off.

 

Then it was just a good sanding job and some grease and put it back together.

 

For what was supposed to be a quick repair, it was. And other than the fact once I had the rotors off I discovered I needed new rotors, it was free to fix.

 

Took my under an hour to do the actual sensor fix...the hardest part was loosening the bolts on my brakes, they were pretty tight. After doing the fix, I havent encountered the issue that I was, so I recommend attempting the fix yourself if you're even remotely mechanically inclined, as I found it very simple and self explanatory.

One wheel bearing & sensor is brand new and the other side I already cleaned up with the same issue. Something else is going on but I haven't had a chance to schedule an appointment to get it in to the dealership.

My truck just started doing the same damn thing. Low speed, coming to a stop, and the whole truck vibrates when the antilocks kick in. Our of warranty too. Nice.

Found out it is the passenger side sensor not reading the correct speed. It is an aftermarket wheel bearing that is about a year and a half old. I took the stock sensor out of the old driver side bearing and put it in the passenger side and it still acts up. I had the dealership tell me what was wrong, but I wasn't gonna shell out the money for them to put a gm bearing & sensor in it. I'm afraid to spend another $115 on an aftermarket and not fix the problem.

Are you more scared of paying out what GM wants to fix it...or rear ending someone and having to pay out the cash for an insurance claim?

 

Bet GM isn't charging you anywhere near what your insurance will charge you, for both your deductible and your increased rates for the next few years.

I read somewhere that people have pulled the fuse out as a temporarily fix. But i am not sure if that would work in your case. You would not have the abs of course, but would be safer than the alternative.

I have the fuse pulled for now so that i don't have any accidents, I had to many close calls and pulled the fuse as it is safer than the abs kicking in every stop

Got the truck fixed. Took it to dealer finally and they told me it was actually the passenger side that was not reading to correct speed. I put a new bearing in this afternoon and after a 5 mile trip around the block, I never had any problems. I had put a different known good sensor in it over the weekend and that hadn't fixed it, so the bearing was next. That bearing was only about a year and a half old, but the tone ring inside must have been messed up in some form, but nothing I could see. Oh well, ABS works now and I don't have to stare at the lights on the dash.

I'm having the same issues. Anyone have pictures of what I should be looking for? Or a link to the TSB?

 

Mine's an '05, but I don't think that it matters....

A shop will be able to read the wheels, and see which VSS is not lining up with the others. I just had this on my moms saturn vue red line. For the saturn, I had to replace the whole hub, as it is part of the assembly.

I have the same problem on my '06.....I asked if GM was going to expand the recall being that a number of newer vehicles are experiencing the same issue as the older recalled vehicles...I was told "No"...so I reported the problem here ( NHTSB )...maybe if enough complaints are lodged, they'll expand it. Feel free to join me.

it is not a recall just a TSB and most dealers will not perform this for no charge because they don't want to get stuck with the bill if you are out of your 3/36k warranty.

 

I had the same issue with the cloth interior TSB on my 07 GMT900 which I purchased with a GM Certified Warranty. The dealer would not perform the TSB so I called the GM warranty customer service # and told them what was going on. They contacted the dealer and within 24 hours they called me back and said the dealer would take care of it.

I hate to bring up an old thread but this may be the answer to my problem. When applying the brake a a low speed and hitting a bump the abs would kick on and it was like I lost brakes completely. Did it once or twice last fall but then did it in the a few days after christmas when out plowing and ended up rear ended a car. Plow prevented any damage to my rig but messed up her bumper and now my insurance just went up abit :crazy:

Anyway now that the weather is getting better I definatly would like to get this fixed. What exactly to I have to sand/clean up? I keep hearing about a possible recall for this but can't find any good info. Truck is a 2000 3/4 ton Silverado and I'm in Vermont so I'd assume that would be in the "salt area" that I heard mentioned

    • It added a cost layer to an already limited production supply. True that. 
    • Swap costs and supply/demand balance. When a barrel comes out of the ground the entire range of products are present but not all at the same percentage.    Breakdown of Refined Products The following table summarizes the approximate output from a standard 42-gallon barrel of crude oil: Product Type Gallons per Barrel Percentage of Total Gasoline 20 gallons 45% Diesel Fuel 9 gallons 21% Other Products 13 gallons 31%   Most of that diesel figure is 'straight run' or cut from the barrel. Gasoline 'cut from the barrel runs 0 to 20% at the crude. So in the crude unit there is more diesel the gasoline, usually.  The full refining experience however gives the tabled values. Ego there is half the diesel than gasoline after the 'first crack' That could be an FCC unit, or Isomax or....   Those units take heavy products and break the big ones into little ones. Those numbers are harder to get hold of but directionally it ends up the same.    Really light products are very profitable. Ethylene and Propylene to name two. Those are cracked from slightly heavier feeds like NG and Propane and Ethane. The cracker harshness determines the feed for distillation. Those feeds come from less profitable products like diesel and gasoline.    So...there is a swap cost. How much market is there TODAY and what crude am I running TODAY..... what is my process capable of always.    There is this as well. The USA uses allot more gasoline than it does diesel so in the cracker the process is tilted to gasoline production which....limits supply of diesel. OTR uses the most and it has different requirements than automotive and agricultural.  Limiting auto products.    You are correct however. It is less refined, just less of it. Allot less. 
    • Most thermostatically controlled ATF systems use a 'wax' pill just like the one in your water thermostat. They work on the expansion volume of the wax and the pill is constructed in such a way as to limit the travel to remain within that range. This means it has an opening temperature often called the 'cracking temperature' and a fully open temperature. For whatever reason oil is designated by it's fully open temperature and water by it's cracking temperature.    Between the two it the "Regulating Temperature" The entire range is about 20 F from closed to open. In your example the lower limit, opening point of 145 F then has a fully open temp of 165 F and a throttling temperature of 155 F.    Thing is, the throttling temperature needs two things to work properly. Enough system load high enough to reach the minimum and a heat sink (cooler/exchanger) large enough to prevent any load applied from exceeding the fully open temperature.    If your system exceeds the fully open temperature it is screaming MORE COOLER.    Here is the silly part of the whole thermostat system where the oil is cooled/heated by the radiator. Nothing is flowing to that system until the oil temperature reaches the cracking temperature unless it is equipped with a minimum flow bypass orifice or a bypass built into the seating surface of the plunger. That system meant to get it up to temp quicker isn't doing a thing until WORK drives if from ambient to cracking temp. One a cold winter day, like zero F, it may never get hotter than about 110 F. Sometimes not even that.    People forget or are young enough to not know that until this millennia transmissions were cooled by the radiator cold tank alone and without a thermostat at all.  In the 50's they weren't even cooled. OEMs learn everything the hard way.    When an OEM tells you the trans "Works best" between 175 F and 220 F it means works best for THEM. The transmission thermostat is fuel play. If you watch you trans temps like I do you will learn that it may take a hundred miles if you are not towing and not driving more than say 55-60 mph on a zero F day to even reach 120 F and it might sit there all day if it's colder. Yet if functions perfectly over about 100 F. It may need to get a bit warmer for the fuel and spark maps to go without an multiplier.    Worry more about too hot. Use a cooler large enough to put that thermostat in range.         
    • Around 2008 if memory serves they took sulfur out. That was when diesel went up.
