Speedometer Cluster Failure

I've already had to replace the instrument cluster on my 03 Sierra. The recall didn't cover it, because of mileage.

 

Anyone else have a cluster fail in the small SUV ?

 

 

Any word of a recall?

 

My wife's 05 Ranier started acting funny last night (83k miles)

I haven't heard of anything for the Ranier. The other program for your truck was just a TSB not a recall. MS3DALE should be able to find out any pertinent info for you

The GMT360s and GMT800s alike were known to have problems with failing IPC stepper motors; that's most likely what is happening to your Rainier. I had that issue myself on an '02 Envoy I had.

 

No recall out on it, but there is a TSB in the system for it.

You sure about that, Rich? I seem to remember a TSB for '02-'05 GMT360s talking about stepper motor replacement that was cited by the dealer back when my Envoy at the time had an issue. I'll have to go back and look for it.

I'll look again though,There may have been one out at one time and they "pulled it" (IE-Cancelled it)

I've got the paperwork from service on that truck filed away in the attic.... I'll see what I can find. It wouldn't shock me too much if GM pulled it as I've never heard about '06-'09 GMT360s with the same issue.

 

And sorry if my questioning it offended you; I know you're good at what you do I just swear I remember hearing about it previously.

Attention: Appropriate repair is based on vehicle build date. Use GMVIS to determine the vehicle build date.

 

Condition:

Some customers may comment on a noise coming from the instrument panel cluster (IPC) while driving or on initial start-up. Instrument clusters may contain stepper motor gauge. that can make noise during the following conditions:

 

• Initial startup >(gauges zero/reset)

 

• Gauge ascending and descending >(gauge sweeping)

 

• Engine idle (tachometer ticking)

 

• Engine off >(gauges reset to zero)

 

Cause:

The cause of this noise may come from the instrument cluster gauge., which contain stepper motors. As the gauge pointer moves, rotors and gears inside the stepper motors are rapidly rotated and rubbing one another. It is natural to generate mechanical noise due to all gear movement. However, it will not in any way affect the performance and durability of the cluster.

 

Correction:

For vehicles built or clusters remanufactured on or after March 1, 2005, DO NOT exchange the IPC for a noise only concern. As of March 1, 2005, all stepper motor improvements are in place and noise from the cluster is within the acceptable performance. Any remaining noise from the IPC is inherent to the system design and replacing the cluster for just a noise concern will more than likely result in a similar noise. Please inform the customer that the IPC is performing within the acceptable guideline. If after the customer has been informed and still insist to replace the cluster, then the cluster should be replaced.

 

For vehicles built or clusters remanufactured prior to March 1, 2005, clusters should be replaced for noise concern.

 

Clusters should continue to be replaced for any concern affecting the functionality of the IPC.

 

Parts Information:

Cluster exchange units can be obtained from an authorized Electronic Service Center.

Can you describe "acting funny"? Maybe you've got a bad connection or poor ground.

Bingo! That's the one I was thinking of. I looked back at the RO from my dealer and there was a note that said "Replace IPC per TSB#04-08-49-015A."

 

In my case, the tachometer had been making noise for a while and one day just stopped working, at which point I took it in to the dealer for repair under my GMPP Major Guard warranty. The service writer told me GM had a TSB about failed cluster stepper motors and that was probably the issue; maybe he was taking the information in the GMT800 one and assuming the GMT360 one was the same thing

I don't drive it much (windshield is too low), but the speedometer moves erratically for several miles after startup, and may or may not read correctly ass it "warms up". I am running the GPS in her car right now to ensure against speeding tickets.

 

My local dealer (King Cadillac/Buick/GMC/Olds in Florence, SC) service dept claimed they are having quite a few replacements in the Envoys lately. They charge about $425 for the swap service (parts & labor).

Hmm good to know. The cluster in my mom's 2002 Envoy makes the noise at start-up and shut-down but we've yet to experience any reading errors or failures. It's currently got 120,000km (75,000 miles). Now I've probably jinxed it.

Get the stepper motor from ebay for $10 and replace it yourself. It's a fairly easy job.
