"over-active" Lifters On Smoking 2009 Silverado 5.3l Afm

My smoking 2009 Silverado 5.3 that used 2 QT's of oil from 2,500 to 4,500 miles is in at my dealer getting a complete set of new AFM Lifters installed. So another case of over-active AFM lifters documented in case any of your trucks smoke excessively at startup, or consume too much oil. My Dealer's Tech tell's me that GM say's to replace the lifters. Oil collecting in the intake is an indicator. No they wouldn't replace all of the lifters with Non-AFM lifters and turn off the AFM in the computer - Believe me I asked. The 6.2 is the only way to go if I could do it over!!!

Can anyone on here please tell me the fastest, most economical way there is to TURN AFM Off on my 5.3? Do I have to buy a tuner to do it? My dealer say's he "can't" turn it off" even if he wanted to... Will someone "rent" me a tuner for 5 minutes please!!!

Damn, mine doesn't eat oil or smoke, but it def makes some annoying racket. I have to call and set an appt to get mine replaced. Let me know how it runs afterward. I am a little leery about letting them rip into my motor. I HATE anyone else, BUT me touching my truck. I wonder how long it would take me to do... I would have to pay for it though!

The Diablo Predator can disable AFM. That's how I disabled it on mine and I am very happy. You can't "borrow" tuners as they are VIN locked to that specific vehicle.

You can also get a custom tune via Blackbear or Wheatley and have them turn off AFM.

How does one get a BlackBear or Wheatley tune? Will they simply just turn off the AFM for me versus doing a full tune? I had a Predator for my 2007 Corvette and will go that route if necessary.

Get the tune. You'll be more pleased with your truck after you have it done.

Considering I had to have my lifters replaced as well, I doubt the issue has anything to do with AFM. Probably just some cheap/defective parts. When I had mine replaced the dealer had already seen at least 2 6.2's with the issue. Who knows how many more since then. Still working out a rough idle issue... but at least the lifters are good to go.

....fow now.

Ron, I think if you get the full-blown Blackbear tune you'll like the results. He can shut off AFM as a part of his tuning process.

Get in touch with Justin to discuss it. www.blackbearperformance.com

Is there anyone with 07 & 08s with AFM that have had the same issue? I'm thinking this may be limited to a few 09s...

I'm starting to think the same thing. I haven't had any oil consumption issues with my '08.

My 08 AFM engine hasn't had any issues. They did change a few things in the 09s, maybe they changed the material or manufacturing process of the 09 lifters?

Just did my 2nd Mobil 1 5W-30 oil change (6500 miles) and haven't seen any issue of this with my '09 5.3 ... hope they take care of yours.
