Accumulator/refigerant Question

I believe that the cycling switch has quit on my Silverado. It doesn't blow cold and the system isn't cycling. It is not accepting a charge, either. From everything that I have read, it appears that the cycling switch has gone bad. I can get one for like $25, but I need clarification on a couple of things:

1) Is it true that this part just screws into the accumulator?

2) Do I have to evacuate the refigerant first? I don't know if unscrewing the part opens the system up or not.

Thanks.

Mine has a schraeder valve, valve core, that prevents refrigeration loss. Even if yours does not, as long as the system is not open for more than a few seconds, you probably do not have to evacuate. To test the switch, pull off the connector and short the terminals, the compressor should start.

1) Yes

2a) No

It's a very easy job, it takes longer to unclip the connector than it does to replace the sensor.

You'll hear a momentary PSSST when you unscrew the old one but don't worry about it. There's a schraeder valve (like a tire valve) under the sensor so unscrew it quickly and you'll minimize any refrigerant lost.

Quick check..... Pull the connector off by pass the two wire in the harness with a paper clip. If the clutch cycles... Its either the system is low or the switch is bad..

Yeah, just take a small wrench and screw it off... It won't leak any out to speak of....
