Ec Rear Door Speakers

Recommended Posts

I know the size is 4x6 for the speakers, but without taking the panel off is it possible to fit a larger speaker in the rear door? To go larger than a 4x6, I could do a 5x7, or 6x8, or 7x10.

Right now I am about to get 6.5" for the fronts and whatever i can get for the back. This is where I am going to start, I need to replace the fronts since they are really bad, but I am going to replace everything while Im at it.

Are there any good brands to look at? Or any to stay away from? I have never heard of some of the brands but they seem to be all over the place (boss, pyle). I was looking at getting sony or kenwood.

I put a Sony system in the wifes Blazer and hate it! it has way to much treble and very little base. Unless you are planning to add an amp and subwoofer, dont go Sony.

I had a set of Alpine Type-S components in my old S10. Sounded good and they had no amp. But can handle enough power that they could be amped and would have sounded even better.

Why does this always get so far out of control. I dont want to amp, I need new, good speakers. I want good sound, no amp and a little more bass.

I was sold on the sony's but as noted above they are not as good as I thought they used to be. I dont want to be spending more than $100 on these speakers, its just not worth it to me. I see some nice kenwoods, infinity, alpine, and other brands. But like I said there are a few brands that seem like a good product that I have never heard off like BOSS.

Not trying to get on you guys for all the advice but its getting a little off track, I just want some good cheap speakers. If it helps we often jam to country, classic rock, metal, new stuff. We are not very often above the half way mark on the stock head unit, so its not like a concert in the truck. Just good clean music.

If you want good bass without a subwoofer and installing aftermarket speakers, it will be slightly hard to do.

4x6 speakers really do suck, so I see why you want to go with a 5x7 (which might be all you can fit IF you can fit them).

Factory speakers handle bass much better than aftermarket ones (at least in my experience).

My truck (1998) actually had tweeters in the door panel in front of the window buttons along with 6.5in in the door itself.

The component speaker setup will have a seperate tweeter from the 6.5" "woofer" that is in your door. The advantage to this setup is you get to put the tweeter in a good spot. High frequencies are much more directional than low frequencies. The placement and direction of tweeters is key to a system. If you don't care that much about the highs and more about the lows, I don't see the point in spending the extra money.

If you want a little more clarity in the highs, you could try to go with 3-way speakers. I only went with 2-way. (factory is 1-way with a stinking paper cone in the middle).

I know you don't want a subwoofer, but I think there might be "6.5in subwoofers" out there, but I've never heard them. The smallest subwoofers I've seen are 8in. You could try the "6.5in subwoofers" in the doors and buy seperate tweeters to make up the difference for the front.

You are limited on power output based on your stock head unit. I have no idea what it is, but I don't think you can get super fancy with speakers.

I went with a Kenwood eXcelon system. I installed it myself and ran all new wiring too (left the factory wire all in tact). I didn't look at Alpine because they tend to cost more, but since you won't be buying an amp or sub, you should probably spend the extra money on the speakers.

This is just some of my thoughts. I may be wrong so I wouldn't be surprised if someone disagrees with me.

Infinity's have always treated me very well. I listen to the same stuff as you and these will do great. I had Infinity Reference up front and rockford fosgates in the rear pillars of my RCSB 2000, the fronts I believe are the same in your truck and my old 2000. I did not amp them. I got the package for under 200 off onlinecarstereo.

Truthfully, spend more on the fronts and leave the back stock. Aftermarket in the ext cab doors will give you a little bit more punch but you get about 75% of your sound out of the fronts. Fade your stocks all the way to the back and you will see what I mean. Hope this helps a little bit more. This is just my experience, because like you, I have never had a boat load of $ to throw around. I'm sure others will have different personal preferences.

If you could somehow fit 6x9, they have by far the best bass of any stand-alone speaker. I've only seen guys fit these in a Reg Cab though.

dritfan21 is right, in the driver's seat, you barely hear the rear speakers. Good fronts are a must. The only time you hear how much they suck is when you are in the back seat.

And I am going to look at the back doors this weekend, I am going to look to see what I can work in there. A little work to make something fit wouldnt hurt much. I dont know if I will go oval or round, cant really make that choice until I get the panel off and see how it looks.
