How Tough Are These Trucks?

after watching the chevy truck month adds and remembering the old adds of the massive loads being bombed into the beds, i was thinking how tough are these trucks really? i'm assuming so much of the commercials are sugar coated, and that brings me to the questions what have you put your truck though and how well did it handle it? have these trucks been tested head to head with the man rams and the terd-150s?

yes just a random late night thread, but truck storys just never get old :D

Most I have ever had weight wise would have been 18 basketball size rocks in the front of the bed (35-50lbs each) and 250 brick pavers (6.5lbs each) so about 2350lbs. It was not bottomed out! just sitting low. And it was just gong from one end of the property to the other while doing some yard work. And the more I think about it, I have a bed liner (50lbs) and 2 rubber mats (200lbs) so it would really be closer to 2600lbs.

Going down the road, I had 22 boxes of 3/4" oak hardwood flooring. no clue how much a bow weighted, maybe about 50lbs?

The most crap was 2 full pallets (40 some) rolls of attic insulation. they were about 6.5' tall and on 2 48"x48" pallets. I had to strap them in and leave the tailgate down. I darn near had to drive the hilo for the dumb sh*t at lowes because he kept telling me that a 48" pallet would not fit between the wheel wells, then he just about smacked my tailgate!

Our company truck (2000 chevy 1500 ecsb, 4.3, 2 wheel drive) has had 4000lbs in the bed! many times, the bottom on the bed is actully bowed down :D , but it is still standing.

I put a full pallet of sod in the back of my 08. Probably 2500+ pounds. The truck felt the load for sure, but in tow haul mode it was fine and the springs did not bottom out.

I had my '06 1500 sitting on the rubber stoppers with a load of Pavers on three consecutive trips, didn't want to stop worth a crap, had me a little worried, but made it home each time. I have had it loaded with Top Soil many times, but the Pavers were the test, now the truck is starting to nickle and dime me to death.....wait, no nickles and dimes...dollar$....only 56,000 and she's falling apart....do I repair, or buy new, but different brand, this one is obviously not meant for a long relationship. :D

I`ve added one extra spring ply in the rear to help with heavy loads but last summer I hauled three loads of 1" stone the lightest being 2600lbs and the heaviest being 3500lbs, travelled about 35miles on the highway with cruise set no problem, suspension wasn`t even bottomed, not to mention that I run 35`s as well, love my 5.3.

During the summer I haul a 32ft travel trailer with double slide out weighing approx 9500lbs while running 35`s, she definitely works but pulls better than my 94 did with 5.7 and stock tires, had to add larger transmission cooler though.

I, too, had a pallet of sod in the back of my truck. I went to get it and the guy said..."You haulin' it in that?".....I said "Yep".....he said........"Buddy, that pallet of sod weighs 2450lbs dry, and it rained last night."........I said "Put'er on there."

He put it on there...it squatted.......I drove home and put it on my lawn.

2001 2500 4wd 6.0 3.73 gears Z85. 24 foot goose neck. 11 6.5ft hay bales. 1500-2000 lbs each. So 22000 plus trailer. Short drive obo 30 miles each way about 6 to 10 times a year. 2 axles with brakes. Sorta kinda extreme towing. Engine cries just a bit but has no problem bring it up to 65........ Seems to have ample control also considering the weight.

But edgewise my 1999 1500 2wd 5.3 3.42 Z85. I have had the bed full to the top bed rails with concrete retainer wall bricks... Don't remember how many will fit but the leaf springs did not bottom out..... Several 60+ mile trips (I think it took 12 trips) but I got all the flower beds fixed to where the cross ties will NEVER ROT again.

On my 06 1500 Z71 I had 1860 (weighed at a scale for a DITY move) in the back of the truck and felt like I could probably put just a little more in it. She was squatting but I felt like i had ample control.

The parts on the commercials of the trucks going air borne and bottoming out suspensions off-roading...

Well I did exactly that and how you see it in the commercial is exactly what I did with a stock Z71. Two wheel hubs, CV's, a front differential, non-locking G80, all brakes disc and drums later....She was pretty much back to being good shape again. Oh yeah went through two sets of shocks. One were some Reflexes that just sucks and then finally Bilsteins which I should have put on at the start.

For hauling I think they do just fine but really you arent doing much but bending some metal and then going from one place to another. The real abuse comes from bouncing around on the trails putting some crazy impact stress on components. Now I am not naive to think the truck would be invincible, but dang it the commercial said I could do it so I did. Several thousand dollars of warranty repairs says otherwise.

i've had a pallet of top soil(wet) in my bed...the morons loaded it directly over the axle..all of it that is, and the truck was squatting and road bad but the shocks were fryed, the motor had no problem moving it though....lol just think of how many people have tryed stopping a cargo plane with a tundra...lol

I'm also proud to say that I've had my truck airborne. I was coming down a dirtbike trail (it was a WIDE one Lol) and there was a jump at the bottom of a hill that I didn't see. Well I hit it doing every bit of 25-30 mph. Landed with a THUD and kept right on driving.

Yes, Disc Brakes front, Drums in the rear. Once it hit 45,000 miles....Evap Solenoid, Radio Control buttons on the steering wheel going out one by one, lights on the radio also going out, knocking in the steering shaft, knock in front suspension, knock in rear, Low Speed ABS Activation.....I'm not use to this, I usually get a new truck by 30,000 miles, I was hoping to keep this one and pay it off without anything more than maintenance cost....I mean geez, I even had to put tires on it, I haven't bought tires in 20+ years

WOW thats a list you got there! The only issue I am having is some of the radio light burned out, front axle seal had to be replaced, and now I am fighting some oil burn. (which could have been my engine not liking amsoil, so I just changed back to vavoline and am wathcing close)

WOW you have not bought tires in 20 years....... Since 2001 I have put 4 sets of tires on my 1999........ Plus the OE set......

Dang whats a little maintenance against a note every month that just never quits?

hrm, EVAP solenoid, alternator, belts x2, egr valve, plugs 2x, wires, rebuilt the brake module board (low speed activation problem), complete front end job (less replacing the rack), intermediate shaft x2, brakes x2 (once just to get ride of a pulsation in the brakes), replaced every piece of the Ebrake (I FINALLY GOT THAT SOB to hold the truck after I did that)

175xxx miles on the odometer she does not burn oil.

Transmission started showing her age at about 170k I am waiting on it to give up before I pull it. I guess I am just gonna rebuild it. I had thought about a brand new 4L65E but I still might get a wild hair and just order the new one...

I am NOT COMPLAINING about mine....... It is paid IN FULL for..... NO interest..... and the full coverage is at a nice rate now.... Plus the tag is like 50 bucks.....

Anybody got a BRAND new 1999 GMC Sierra SLT 1500 2wd w/5.3??? as near possible to 0 miles.... I might consider buying another one.... hahaha
