Paint Fade Covered By Warranty?

Recommended Posts

My truck = 2007 GMC Sierra.. white.. 35,826 miles.

In my attempt to inspect everything before my warranty runs out, I've noticed my side moldings are noticeably darker (almost yellowish) than my doors. This isn't anything new, but after wash/wax a couple of days ago I realized how obvious it is!

Any chance 'side molding color fade' might be covered under 36,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty..?

Sure the dealership will initially say No... just curious if anyone has had any luck.. a'prec

If the molding is really faded then I think they should replace it, But many of these painted painted items can change color from exposure and while they may not color match, they may be still good and that is where a dealer could say, nothing wrong with it and I don't see much difference in the color. You have to check with a dealer, one may tell you NO and another my tell you YES. Just play your cards right, going in there complaining loudly might get you no where.

I never hear of any 5 yr paint warranty though, that goes when the 36/36 warranty runs out. Unless he is thinking about the rust thru provision but that does not include neglect or environmental.

PS-Seems common that the white molding don't hold match to the white paint as I have noticed that before. Its probably the plastic bleeding thru.

talk to your dealer's service dept. if you get no where call GM corp. direct and see what they have to say about it.

Caz, do you park your truck with one side facing direction of the Sun most of the time? I had a Pewter coloured 03 Silverado for six years and tended to park it with the passenger side facing south towards the Sun both at home and at work. After about 4 years, I started noticing the moulding on that sunny side was fading noticably and by the 5th year the surface had turned to a chalky texture while the paint on the doors and indeed the rest of the vehicle, still looked brand new. The moulding on the other side still looked brand new as well.

As a side note, my father has a 95 Chevy Beauville van in a medium metalic blue colour and that truck has literaly never been washed and the paint still looks brand new as well.

As another side note, both my father and I have had to have the power window motors replaced in those sunny side doors. I'm wondering if repeated excessive heat build up in those doors from the Sun could cause a problem? His sunny side is the driver side and mine is the passenger side.

I'm presuming the paint on both our trucks is so durable because GM used that bad and nasty environmentaly unfriendly paint instead of the fragile and quickly fading paint the our wise governments make them use nowadays.

Cheers, lvlagnum. :flag:

It happened to my 07 Classic. The moldings on both sides had yellowed. I had to leave for a couple of days. They said they have to paint the new ones. They replaced them under warranty. :flag:

Take the molding off, it will look better

I'd like to but the truck is 3 years old now and i'm worried that i might have a off-color area from the molding protecting the paint from sun/wear for so long or the paint shows stains from dirt being stuck behind molding.

anyone remove moldings after several years? any problems?

my park direction is pretty random..

That my problem too I think if I remove my molding I will have a off-color where the molding were. I have add my moldings painted twice so fair. They are fading once again. My warranty has run out, I called the 1800 to file a complaint. GM refuse my claim.

since u are still under warranty, the dealership should take care of it. my truck has 12000 miles on it and my moldings were faded. i told them, and they said to wax it-whatever. i brought it back a month later, told them i did, and it did nothing. the dealership knows how well i take care of my truck, so they didnt argue. the next day my truck had freshly painted moldings. maybe u should try to sweet talk the service people.....

If you have any off-color areas left behind after removing the moldings, just take the truck to a professional detailer and they can machine polish the whole truck and make things look right again. From there on out just make sure to keep wax on the paint to protect it and you won't have any such concerns to worry about.

my dealer, Courtesy GMC of Lafayette, is going to pull them off and repaint them. They gave me no problems.. only took about 5 mins to explain problem and schedule appt. Moldings should be bright 'n' white by the end of the week!

I am still waiting on my chrome molding to fade out.... But I doubt it will be covered under warranty.... 175k 11yrs old..... But yours.... Absolutely should be covered. Your still in the 3/36...... Hold their feet in the fire. I would.

Dad's 86 the paint started pealing off a couple months after he bought it in 86...... Dealer would never do anything about it.... In like 94 or 95 he heard about a recall and got the campaign number dropped by (he was still driving it everyday then)...... They had to pull it down to steel on all flat surfaces and re-prime and paint with base clear the ENTIRE TRUCK. I think he paid, to have some light body work fixed (door dings). But 10yrs later the truck looks the same again, the paint was pealing... I don't think the pulled the primer off like the campaign said to do. OH well, I will soda blast it when I get around to that truck restoring it. I have a couple inline before it gets a turn thou.

The passengers door has ALWAYS scrubbed the threshold on that truck. He took it to a couple dealers and they all said their was nothing they could do to make it stop. Besides cutting the lower hinge off and putting it back on in the correct location. Which they were not willing to do...... In the 86 that is.

Just took mine in today actually for this. No problem, my truck in blue granite metallic even and the mouldings were painted the wrong colour and even installed crooked lol. Must have been replaced once before and the guy before me never noticed, BUT my dealer said no problem. Gettin' new ones. Just thought i would share.
