Bed Capacity For Dirt/compost

Anybody know approx how many yards of dirt or compost you can fit in the back of a 6.5' bed?

My calculation show almost two, but some real world experience would be great.

Thanks.

I was able to fit 2 in my old '86 3/4T (8' box mind you) with room to spare, but I think it is the weight you need to consider, not the volume. The compost that I used to get here could well weigh 1800lb/ cubic yard, depending on how wet it is.

oh yeah....never gave the weight much consideration. I should probably just have them deliver it, unless I find somebody local with a trailer I could borrow.

I was moving mulch last weekend. You can fit 2 yards and it may be ok with mulch but with topsoil the weight is going to be working the truck. I would say go for it if its close otherwise have it delivered.

I did 1 yard of top soil a few weeks ago. Not a problem in this truck. I wish the bed was a bit longer. I had to let the tailgate down to accommodate the dirt. Two yards would really be pushing it I think. I'm going to try to fit 2 yds of mulch in there pretty soon. My truck is a short bed.

6.5 feet x 4 foot wide (in between wheel wells) x 2 foot tall divided by 27 cu ft in a yard = 1.92 cu yards.......id say a full 2 yards leve to the top is no problem.

the problem is topsoil can weigh 2500 lbs per yard. 5000 lbs is alot in a nice truck.....delivery might be a better option.

It will hold it until the weight causes the suspension to collapse onto the overload bumpers. At that point consider the truck fully loaded. Drive careful!!!! Nothing like WHITE KNUCKLE DRIVING.

But 2 yards will fit in the bed of my 91 F150 w/6.5 bed..... with ease. I got several loads of bark last year dumped in the bed of it........ The loader they used has a 2 yard bucket..... They filled the bucket and it was mounded up tooo...

There's no doubt that you'd be riding on the bumpstops.

I picked up a load of horse manure compost last night. The bed was almost full....more heaped in the middle, and not level to the sides of the bed. It was pretty wet stuff, and I had no problems with it.

Going to get some soil/compost today, probably not two yards though. I'll start out with 1 and see how that goes. It's not real wet stuff...so it should be ok.

I picked up two yards today....made two trips though. One yard was just about as much as I was willing to put back there. Even with two trips it was still cheaper than their delivery price. Even as wet as the manure/compost was, it still wasn't anywhere near the weight of the soil.
