Gas Milage

what after market products have you guys used that have actually worked to improve your mileage

Tonneau's - Don't work. Actually made my mileage worse. But the functionality of a cover is has more value than mileage.

Various fuel additives - Nothing works and even those that have some effect dont actually save you money. With the cost of the gas and the product you lose every time.

Synthetic Oil - I use Royal Purple and I noticed the motor runs better and I actually gain a mile or so in gas when the oil is fresh.

Intakes and Exhausts - The more air in the more fuel gets burned. With fuel injected engines the vehicle controls the mixture. Adding intakes or exhaust don't do anything really other than looks and sound. For these items to take effect you would have to retune it to change the mixture. People usually dont add these things with fuel economy in mind.

Tuning - This to me would seem like it would be the most beneficial. This way you can change how the mixture happens whether it be more air/fuel or less. Power and fuel economy are polar opposites. You can't have both. So if you want fuel tune to save fuel but expect to lose some power in the process. You want power expect your mileage to suffer.

I think GM has done what they can to balance all of these from the factory and mostly with Fuel Economy in mind. I am sure there are a lot of measures in place to sway it one way more than the other. Tuning can fix this. I would make sure it was somebody who knows a thing or two and not some joker with a how-to manual in his garage.

Slowing down. Amazing mileage gains by as much as 20% can be had by dropping your speed from 75 to 65. Not that I ever do it, mind you.

Hey guys. Depends on the truck with mileage. My CCLB dually likes to run about 2400RPM which around 74MPH. At that RPM and speed I achieve 13.5 to 14.1 MPG. Any slower and it falls off to about 11 any faster and its about 11 also. That MPG is of course on the cruise control. Just my opinion. Also running premium gas an synthetic oil is the ONLY way I achieve this.

a real helpful aftermarket product to reduce fuel consumption is ....

... a brick to place under the accelerator pedal

Assuming your engine and the ignition parts are all in good condition... when it comes to trying to improve fuel economy everything else is just snake oil designed to lighten your wallet

Gentlemen,

Big mileage gains from driving "ahead" of the vehicle. When a light turns red a quarter mile ahead, COAST. This makes a big difference. Try to reasonably decrease brake use.

There is just too much aerodynamic data that shows that a tonneau cover works. Universities have demonstrated this in wind tunnels and mythbusters even did a segment that shows it works.

What is wierd though is that an open tailgate increases drag. Aerodynamics is really strange sometimes.

Tired o2 sensors tend to drive the mixture rich. A new one can help in high mileage vehicles.

The mythbuster's I saw showed no tonneau with net type tailgate was most fuel efficient. Which one are you talking about?

This is the ONLY thing that will really improve your mileage. Be smooth, drive slower, and try to brake as little as possible. Braking simply turns energy used to create motion into wasted heat. Remember, nothing is free. Energy spent NOT moving you forward is wasted.

These trucks get just abuot what they are going to get. Nothing add-on wise will have much effect.

making people push the truck while its off really bumps the mileage....i just take it easy on the throttle and let it warm up a little and my average is 19-20 on the highway  i run fuel system cleaner every other oil change and it seems to decrease my mileage a tad but the engine runs alot smoother

What's your MPG with your 2010 Sierra with the duramax....??

Tires will have some effect on your fuel economy. Inflate the tires slightly higher than the recommended pressure, stay away from overly aggressive off road treads, as they increase the rolling resistance. And no oversized tires and no lifts!
