Discs And Hub

So, I was getting ravenous vibrations on braking. Okay, time for new rotors. Put the round-out gauge on front-left rotor, it was out of round .006 (.005 is maximum limit). So, I put on new rotors (getting the old OEM rotors off was absolutely brutal, sledge-hammer and liquid wrench galore). Put on new rotors, put wheels back on, go for a drive. Damn, vibration still there. So, I put the gauge on the new rotor and sure enough it's still out .006 or so. I take the rotor off and put the round out gauge on the hub. Ah-ha! The hub is out of round! So, put on new hub (SKF) and replace rotor, now whole assembly is off .0015. I'll take it. This would also explain this constant vibration that I was getting on the highways. So, the lesson here, check your hubs! I had 130k on mine so I can't really complain. I will say this though, I think the bearing was fine, I think some jagof used an uncontrolled airwrenh on the lugnuts at some point and caused the warpage.

My 1999 GMC 1500 NBS 2wd 178k OE Hub Bearings........ Still quite tight I checked them last weekend when I changed the differential fluid.

But my 2001 Chevy 2500 NBS 4wd made it to about 100k on the OE on the left... Right is still good and tight...

I have done brake jobs on some trucks that see snow belt areas during the winter..... They are the ones I TAKE 2 hub bearings home when I do a brake job on them..... Sometimes It is easier to unbolt the bracket and put a new bearing on and rotor than get the old rotor off...

When all else fails I get out Elzzzzy..... That is what I call my 25lb sledge... a couple love taps around the hub of the rotor and some snake piss (your flavor of penetrate oil) and it will come loose.

Next time I'm going to take that 2 hub bearing approach. It was just f'en fused man.
