Window Tint Laws

i looked up the tint laws for NY and it says the front side windows have to allow 70% of light threw so does that mean i can put 30% tint on them?

No, its the other way around. The % of tint is how much light it allows through (30% tint will allow 30% light ... 70% tint will allow 70% light). And 70% is your factory front windows = LEGALLY, You're not allowed to have tint.

If you want to attract the police attention just tint and your going to be a candidate for tickets. Police just look for any excuse to pull young people over and not only can you receive a ticket for the tint you may be the recipient of several more. speeding,excessive noise, broken windshields come to mind.

no no no im not doing any tinting that is illegal. the back windows came tinted from the factory

Could be that the state law is covering aftermarket tint only whether or not it's applied by a private company or dealer-installed. It looks like the references are only made to a "film". Factory tinted glass is made that way, there is no film applied to the window.

If the NY law reads such that the 70% value applies to both the front and back side windows, then you would expect that a large number of vehicles would either be illegal for sale in that state or the vehicle manufacturers would be required to install a different rear side window.

The tintcenter website may have summaries of the tint laws for different states, but the only way to get the correct information is to go to the state's website where you can read the specific law. Privately owned websites will be no help in court if you are fighting a ticket for illegal tint.

I looked into tinting my windows until I discovered that a cop could pull you over and write you a ticket for $250 f they wanted to for having the illegal tint. Also, you could have a hard time trying to get it to pass inspection every single year while you have the tint on it. If you know the right people then by all means go for it. I just didnt like the idea of paying $120 for the tint and then being susceptible to $250 fines on top of that.

I'm not trying to be facetious or start anything, but aren't most States Laws regarding window tinting open to interpretation of the arresting officer? We have local window tint laws and I have not seen even one stand up in court, yet! There is too much discrepancy in "the amount of light permitted" through a tinted window "on a given day". David

We have local window tint laws and I have not seen even one stand up in court, yet! There is too much discrepancy in "the amount of light permitted" through a tinted window "on a given day". David

Most state laws spell out specific percentages that are allowable on specific windows of the vehicle. If a calibrated tint meter is used then there is no room for discrepancy. They seem to stand up in the local courts in my area...but every jurisdiction has differences.

As he said... the legality and measurement is not subjective at all. It is at the discretion of the officer to enforce the law by checking it if he feels it is too dark.

They cannot write citation without using a calibrated VLT meter. The vast majority of the time the first citation is a "fix it" ticket where you must prove that you have removed the tint and/or pay a fine. Repeat offenses may have additional penalty for recurrence.

say u have a vehicle registered in florida where its legal to tint your windows pretty dark, if they are here in NY will cops bother them or are they legal because their registered in FL

I live in NY too... I've had tint on every truck ive owned because i get bad headaches from the intense sun

On my truck now i have 30% on sides , and a limo strip on front which comes down 6-8"..

Ive never been bothered by cops... But i know theres always that one out there that could be an A-hole , which in that case i would go to eye doctors and get the appropriate note for it ..

looks darker here than it is..

Older pic.. here u can see its lighter than the back and u can see thru it... which is mainly what cops want , to be able to see you and make sure your not doing anything illegal / have a gun / etc..
